It was
Gladys Knight and the Pips who made this song famous. The way I see it, you have
two choices--one is a Motown party and the other is creating Georgia in your
front room! Since a Motown party is easy, let's go for the train to Georgia
thing.
Invitations
A flier/invite asking your friends/family to "make tracks to your
house to take the Midnight train to Georgia" with you on New Years Eve!
That'll get 'em talking. If you can find something with peaches on it, you're
one step ahead. Visit our invitation shop for more custom invites
Decorations
At the front door, a sign that says, "Midnight Train to Georgia, Track
12"--will start everything off. As your friends come in, give them each a
conductor hat instead of the usual New Year's hat--something to throw in the
air at Midnight. Write their name on the brim so others know who they are (if
this is a mixed group).
Put a sign over the door of each room to signify a different part of the
train--the engine, caboose, sleeper cab, "On the Rails Buffet," etc.
On your buffet, set up a train--going in a circle--with a lot of box cars
or flat cars that can hold appetizers, etc., loaded onto them. Don't be funny
and have it whizzing around, or no one will be able to grab that carrot stick!
For centerpieces, use conductor hats again with balloons and Champagne
Bottle Mylar balloons coming through the top.
On the bathroom doors, use railroad crossing
signs, and if you're really talented, add a movable arm so that when
someone is using the bathroom, they can pull it down to indicate it’s
occupied.
Menu
I vote for the usual fare you'd serve at any party--things that are fast
and easy for both you and your guest. Make sure each "dish" has a
special name, though, to go with the theme: Box Car Chip Dip, Red Caboose
Chili, etc.
And then, of course, this is where Georgia comes in. For dessert, peach pie
is a must, ice cream with peaches, peach cobbler and other "peach"
items should grace your dessert buffet!
Check out our PartyMenu411 section for great
menus.
Favors
Well, a piece of coal works for both the holidays and trains (and now they
come in chocolate; check it out at your local candy store or
e-mail
us). Red and white kerchiefs/bandanas
(made famous by conductors, you know) can be used as favors (or napkins). As
well, at any discount store (I just saw them at Wal-Mart), there are great
locomotive-shaped tins that you can fill with candy!
Activities
Do the LOCOMOTION, what more is there?
