"What A
Surprise" Shower for Mature Moms-to-Be
What do you think went through the middle-aged woman's
mind, as her doctor told her that rather than getting ready for her body to go
through menopause, she was about to go through pregnancy? Some women go through
a mid-life crisis, while others take a refresher course on the joys of
motherhood. Whether it is a second (or third) marriage that prompts this new
bundle of joy or the frisky forties (even fifties), we have that some women are
having babies in place of a mid-life tummy tuck. So what do you do for a
mother-to-be who has had so much practice at being a mom that she could write a
book about it herself? Surprise her with a "What a Surprise" baby
shower! Gather together a bunch of her closest friends for a pajama party. Watch
movies like Baby Boom and Father of the Bride 2. Eat a little bit of junk food.
Give each other makeovers. Pamper the mature mother-to-be with some
old-fashioned fun. Make her surprise your surprise with a surprise party.
Invitations
Since the mother-to-be is the guest of honor (so to speak), copy her baby
picture on the front of the invitations. Or, put a current picture of her face
on the body of a baby as the front of the invites.
Another cute idea is to illustrate on the front of the invitation the
purpose of the party and some of the fun things you will be doing.
Better
yet, send out your invitation on a customized
candy bar wrapper.
Decorations
For the decorations, go with the theme "Something old, something new,
something pink, yellow, and blue". The old is the idea of having a shower
for the mother-to-be. The new can be all of the new gifts that the mother will
receive. For the pink, yellow, and blue, hang streamers all over the room,
throw confetti when the guest of honor enters the room, use pink, yellow, and
blue paper goods, and maybe even hang a congratulations banner.
As for the centerpieces and the seating cards, who are you kidding? This is
an ultra casual affair with good friends/family, good food, and great fun! Sit
on the floor with a bunch of pillows (to ensure the mother-to-be's comfort)
and blankets. Chat it up, giggle, scream and cry.
Menu
Like we said, this is ultra casual. Have a potluck to satisfy the
mother-to-be's pregnancy induced food cravings. We suggest that at least one
person bring a jar of pickles, ice cream and possibly some chocolate chip
cookies.
Activities
A better question to ask about this category is what won't you be doing?
Let's see… Give each other makeovers, watch movies that star maturer women
having babies like Baby Boom and Parenthood, play games like Truth or Dare and
bond, bond, bond.
Here are a couple other games you might want to play:
"Junk Food Frenzy" - This is a great game that will keep
your tummy full and keep you laughing. Dig out some of your favorite
desserts and copy the instructions on index cards. Buy ingredients for all
the desserts and place them on the kitchen counter. Shuffle the cards and
divide the guests into two teams. Have players take turns drawing cards.
Each player reads the card and takes the listed ingredient. When all the
ingredients have been distributed, give the teams thirty minutes to prepare
a dish using the ingredients accumulated by the individual players. When the
dishes are complete, have each player taste and eat the results, then vote
on the best tasting dessert! For a fun variation, give both teams the same
ingredients and see what different desserts they come up with (without using
recipes).
"Baby Food Taste Test" - Buy eight jars of baby food-
cereal, fruit, veggies, and meat. Cover the jars with foil, and write a
number on the side of each jar. Pass out plastic spoons, paper plates, and
paper and pencil for each player. Ask players to write the numbers 1 through
8 on the outside of the plate. Pass around each jar of baby food and have
the players drop a spoonful next to each number. They must taste the globs
and try to identify each flavor. Remove the foil to reveal the answers.
Whoever has the most correct answers wins a prize. You'll get some funny
faces during the tasting so keep the camera handy.
Party Favors
A great idea for this party is to pass around single-use cameras. Make
doubles of all the pictures, and give each person a frame that says, "I
was at (mom-to-be's name) What a Surprise baby shower". This way everyone
can have at least remembrance from this great pajama party!
Another cute idea is to give everyone a small token (stuffed animal, key
chain, chocolate filled baby bottle, etc.) in pink, yellow, or blue.
