Let Party411™ help you plan a

Super Safari Birthday Party

"Lions, and tigers, and bears; Oh my!" Animals fascinate all children, whether furry, frisky or ferocious. Turn the house into an animal kingdom for your child's next birthday party, or call your local zoo to see if they have a party room that can serve as homebase for a birthday at the zoo. I bet they do (and you won't have to clean up after the party)! Let the kids experience the call of the wild with this Super Safari birthday party.

Invitations

There are two great Safari packages that can make your planning much simpler (if the kid's saw your work schedule they'd know it's a jungle out there)! Try the Safari Kit-n-Kaboodle from Shindigz.  Or, better yet, we've got a personalized jungle theme invitation.

For another type of invitation, go to your local party store or costume store and buy rubber animal noses. On animal stationary, write all of the pertinent party information. Attach the animal noses to the party information and hand deliver the invitations to the guests. Make sure to tell everyone to come to the party wearing their new noses!

Decorations

Use a life size lion cut out to welcome guests at the door. As the children enter, give them safari hats (after all, this is going to be an adventure). Use the Super Safari Theme or the Safari Kit-n-Kaboodle from Shindigz to make everything else simple.

A safari banner  is a good way to fill a wall and send a special birthday message to your guest of honor.

Shindigz has a nice selection of safari decorations including some really cool balloons.

Use novelties like plastic compasses, rubber snakes, lizards and plastic zoo animals to carry the theme throughout the party setting. Use butterfly or fish net swags around tables and across the room as you would with crepe paper. Place little plastic bugs in the netting to make it appear as if the kids are on safari, catching critters. Use animal cut outs around the party setting to portray animals in a safari.

Centerpieces - Use stuffed animals for the centerpieces. Tie jungle animal print balloons to the animals to make everything more festive. Throw animal crackers as confetti all over the table as part of the look, as well as a tasty snack for hungry children.

If the kids plan on having as much fun as a barrel of monkeys, what about a monkey business centerpiece?

It’s always a good idea to decorate your guests.  I like the animal print retro glasses . Kids think they are really cool.  How can you pass up animal print shoes?   I’d put Mom in a safari hat  or a straw pith helmet .  You’ll look the part and maybe they’ll understand that you’re leading this safari. Jungle beads  are inexpensive and a big hit with your guests.  Throw in some safari fans on a hot day and you’ve got everything covered.

You’ll probably want animal print  paper goods to match the theme.  I think the animal straws  are a nice touch with your beverages.

Menu

Pizza and chicken fingers are some popular finger foods to serve at the party. In addition, give the kids Knox Jell-O in the shapes of different animals (use animal cookie cutters) to go with the meal. Let the children decorate butter cookies in the shapes of their favorite animals (this is also a good way to keep the kids occupied) for dessert.

Activities

"Pin the Nose on the Pig" - Give each child a paper circle to decorate as a pig's nose. Then blindfold each child and have him or her try to stick the nose on the pig. The child who comes closest to putting the nose in the right place wins a prize. Prizes may also be awarded for the "most creative", "most colorful" etc. noses. (This game can be used for any occasion, just substitute a different character and possibly a different "body part").
"Hot Dog"- This game is an old favorite (usually called "Hot Potato"). Have all of the kids sit in a circle, as one kid is chosen as the "leader". Begin passing a stuffed dog around the circle, while the "leader" turns his/her head with eyes closed. Everyone must accept the dog and may not hold it longer than a second. At any point the "leader" can yell, "Hot Dog", and whoever has the dog is out. Continue to play until there is only one person left, and he/she is the winner.

"Name That Animal" - This is a fun game for small children just beginning to learn their animals. Pass out animal stickers or small stuffed animals, and have the kids imitate the animal they receive.

"Find Your Animal" - Each child has to bring his/her own stuffed animal. Put all of the animals together to make one big pile of animals. Then one by one blindfold each child and have them try to find their animal. Give each child who chooses the correct animal a prize!

Make paper bag puppets and let the kids put on a puppet show with a safari story.

Use the face painting crayons to paint the kids' faces to look like animals that they would see on a safari. Fill a lion piñata with all kinds of goodies, and it's sure to keep the kids occupied for quite a while.

Party Favors

Our Safari Tote Bag makes a fabulous goody bag. Cute animal stickers are easy to find, as are small boxes of animal crackers to add to the treat bags. Other favor ideas are: mini-flashlights, rubber snakes, magnifying glasses, animal finger puppets, tattoos, erasers

Shindigz has a safari favor pack that you will want to give out at the beginning  of the party so the kid’s can enjoy the goodies on their day in the jungle.

If you make paper bag puppets, those can be used as the treat bags to hold each child's "winnings" from the piñata.
