Hello, everyone! I'm Jimmy, Party411's Web Guy, and I'm having another birthday (whew, they're starting to add up fast). Birthdays are a big deal to most people, but there's a chance I might overdo it. I think I have come up with the perfect summer party for the guys. A golf outing... plus a cook out... plus a poker game!  The Party Girl thinks I should tell you what I plan to do, and you can decide if it's too much (or maybe too little) to celebrate such an important event.

The Afternoon

We always have a golf outing in the afternoon. In fact, this is the 10th Birthday Outing. Invitations went out already. I did a personalized invitation this year since it is the 10th, but normally I just e-mail invitations to everyone. We usually end up with 20-28 golfers playing a four-man scramble. This is the 2nd year that the fathers (often referred to as the Old Foxes) play our sons (naturally the Young Lions) for the Mr. D trophy (named after my Dad). If you're having a yearly event, I recommend having this kind of special prize for the winners. You'll find that people want to get their name on the trophy more than they want to win a prize or a bet.

Everybody gets a favor on the first tee. I think this year it'll be a few tees, a golf ball, and a personalized candy bar, but I might go with a personalized water bottle. It can get pretty hot out there in August.

The golf tournament itself is a simple affair, but you can dress yours up as much as you like. For some excellent ideas, check out our Father' s Day Golf Outing or Golf Outing themes. Mine is a stag affair, but these things work just as well with mixed couples.

The Evening

After golf, we all travel to my house to relive our rounds (usually shot by shot), eat some grilled food and play some horseshoes or bocce. If you're looking for some great party suggestions for your next barbeque check out our Barbeque Express theme. Most years, this is a stag event, so the food is very simple and very plentiful. Every birthday that ends in a 5 or a 0 sees spouses and non-golfers invited. You know, an old-fashioned blow out. We still cook outside, but you have to vary the menu a bit.  For some reason our wives think that burgers and potato chips is a limited menu.

We decorate for the big parties (not this year, but the party 2 years ago was the stuff of legends). Usually, we throw up some lights, golf confetti, some fancy paper goods, and--last time--a life-sized cutout of yours truly. I thought I looked great, but my "friends" felt obligated to comment on my caricature long and loud. I reluctantly admit that it was some pretty funny stuff.

We usually end the evening by playing poker. Talk about a perfect guy’s day. Golf, food and poker. A perfect birthday present to myself.

I've been doing this long enough to have some statistics for you:

  • Average length of party - 12 hours.
  • How many laughs - Thousands.
  • Stories told - Hundreds.
  • Amount of fun - Too much.

The decorations help, but my friends and family make the day special. This works for me, but the key is getting your friends together in a fun, relaxed atmosphere. For some other ideas for your birthday celebration, check out our birthday themes or ask the PartyGirl.
