A luau is such a fun theme for a kids birthday party!  You can host on inside in the winter to bring a bit of warmth to the cold or have one outside in the summer.  It's also a great gender neutral theme that boys and girls with both love.

An invitation sets the feel for the party before it ever starts – so it's important to WOW your guests with a personalized luau invitation.   You can also choose from fill in the blank invitations.  Be sure to mail your invitations 4 or 5 weeks in advance and be sure to include RSVP information. 
 
Regardless of what invitation you choose, you may want to add some fun luau touches in your envelope.  Here are some fun ideas:
  • Let's Hula stickers are great on the outside of the envelopes 
  • Inflatable tropical ukeleles - now, you'll obviously want to send these deflated, but imagine how excited everyone will be to get one of these with your invitation!
  • Luau confetti - no need for a padded envelope!  Just a sprinkling of fun
And, you're going to want everyone wearing their "hula best", right?  Make sure that's on the invitation as well.

You're going to have a great time decorating for a luau birthday party.  There are so many great choices available for luau decor.  We always start our decorations as soon as the guests arrive.  A welcome banner is always a nice touch, don't you think?  Then we dress our guests.  Have baskets of sunglasses, leis and grass skirts.  This hula set it perfect for a birthday girl to wear to the party.
 
Make the main party area look like you're on the beach.  Inflatable palm trees (or rented real ones), sea shells and tropical flowers will look great.  Here are some great luau decorations that will help set the scene:
  • Luau scene setters - these a great for a large wall in the party area. 
  • Paper lantern garland - hang this lantern garland in doorways or over a buffet.
  • Beach balls - these are not only a great activity, but work well as a decoration on buffets.

A lifesize cutout of the party girl or boy is the perfect finishing touch to your luau decorations.

There are so many great themed paper goods out there for a luau birthday party.  There are dozens of luau theme paper good designs to choose from for your party. Here are a few of our favorites:

When setting your table, don't forget a fun centerpiece.  Tropical flowers or balloons in bright colors are great options.  A pinata is a fun, inexpensive and simple option for a centerpiece.  We love using them as decorations.  They can then be used during game time at the party.   You can add a few finishing touches to the table:

  • We love a fun wrapped napkin.  A flower bracelet looks great around a napkin and doubles as another party favor.
  • Sea shells look great as confetti!
  • Candy also makes great confetti - choose bright (wrapped) candy and scatter them around the table.
  • Add a place mat to each place for the kids to color on at the party. We love the Hawaiian girl placemat and the shark placemat. 

We doubt the kids at your luau are going to want a traditional Hawaiian pig roast.  But, that doesn't mean you can't have a tropical menu.  Fruit skewers and chicken skewers are perfect for a luau and easily satisfy a picky child.  Goldfish crackers are "tropical" and delicious.  For dessert, choose a great luau theme cake.  We love this volcano cake from the Food Network!

If you're luau party is outside in the summer, then swimming is your best bet for an activity!  If you have a pool, that's great. If not, set up an assportment of inflatable pools (best for little kids) or sprinklers (for older kids.) Kids will also love a limbo contest!  It's perfect for a luau.  Don't forget to have some fun prizes available.  Here are some other fun games to play at a kids luau party.
  • Island bowling set with pineapples and a coconut ball.  It's hilarious and the kids will love playing the game!
  • Pinatas are so much fun at a birthday party and are available in a variety of tropical options. 
  • Bubbles!  Kids love bubbles, so have a bowl full of bubble bottles available for them to play with outside.
