Funky Holidays for August
(Sneak a Peek at
September)
Well, I hope August isn't as boring as July. There wasn't much going on, and
I hated to disappoint you potential hosts and hostesses out there. So, I'm gonna
dig deep for August.
Uh oh. Not like the usual months, August has only three quasi-interesting
"national" designations:
National Inventors' Month
National Catfish Month
National Hypnosis Awareness Month
Let's move on.
August 4:
Louis Armstrong's Birthday - He'd be 100! One of the greatest
trumpet players of all time.
Coast Guard Day - Founded in 1790. Have a cruise ship party or a
beach party to celebrate.
August 5:
Premiere of American Bandstand - And Dick Clark hasn't aged a day. A
sock hop comes to mind or a 50's party. It was on this day in 1957 when the
show premiered out of Philadelphia. It was the longest-running musical series,
and a show a lot of us grew up watching.
National Mustard Day - Time to acknowledge all that mustard does for
us on a daily basis. You can host your own celebration or go to the Mount
Horeb Mustard Museum for mustard squirting competitions, mustard games and
free hot dogs!
August 6:
Lucille Ball's Birthday - Our favorite redhead. She may have died in
1989, but her comedy lives on and she is definitely someone to celebrate.
National Fresh Breath Day - Something to celebrate if yours is
fresh; something not to celebrate if your friends look the other way instead
of speaking directly to you.
World Breastfeeding Week Begins - To celebrate the importance of
breastfeeding. You take it from there.
August 11 - 35th Anniversary of National Apple Week
Created when the Beatles' started their new Apple record label.
August 12 - Cecil B. DeMille's Birthday
With movies like King of Kings, Cleopatra, The Ten Commandments and others,
he deserves a round of applause. Have a film festival in his honor.
August 13 - Annie Oakley's Birthday
It was 1860 and before long, she had developed into quite the sharpshooter.
August 18:
Bad Poetry Day - Chase's Calendar of Events suggest you invite
friends over and write rotten verse. Then send it to your old high school
English teacher. I like that idea.
Anniversary of the Mail Order Catalogue - On this day in 1872 by
Montgomery Ward. So, here's an idea. Have your friends bring all their
catalogues to your house, and you have form letters ready for them to send to
each catalogue company telling them to cease mailing or else!
August 19:
My Father's Birthday - Born Howard Foxman in 1921, this man is truly
one of a kind. Long gray hair to the middle of his back, worn in a ponytail,
must make him the world's oldest hippie. Ladies, watch out! Feel free to celebrate Howard's birthday. I'll
send you the papergoods for free!
Bill Clinton's Birthday - Wow! I never knew my dad and Bill shared
the same day. You know, they remind me of each other.
Penguin Awareness Day - In Point Pleasant Beach, New Jersey. Perky
the Penguin will be there, but if you can't--host your own penguin party
(black tie, of course).
National Aviation Day - Since 1939. Hs to do with the Wrights and
the fact that it's Orville's birthday today.
August 20:
National Friendship Week Begins
- Gather all your best buds together for a night out on the town, or write
to a friend you haven't seen in awhile!
August 25:
Kiss and Make Up Day
- Say your sorry and get on with it. Invite everyone who is mad at you to
your house, feed them, stroke them and say you're sorry.
August 26:
Make Your Own Luck Day
- Something about taking matters into your own
hands and making things work. Invite friends over to watch the lottery.
First Televised Baseball Game
- On this day in 1939. The game was between
the Cincinnati Reds and the Brooklyn Dodgers.
Women's Equality Day
- The day when the 19th Amendment was certified
"prohibiting discrimination on the basis of sex with regard to
voting." A holiday since 1974.
August 27:
Martha Raye's Birthday -
On this day in 1916. She was a gutsy woman with a great voice who
entertained the troops through three wars.
August is a little better than July...so I hope you find something that suits
you! Let us know what you plan to do so we can share with our other visitors.
We're always looking for creative ideas!
Have fun.
