Election 2000 Party
Election 2000 is almost here, and at this writing it is
still a dead heat between George W. Bush and Al Gore. This is the perfect
atmosphere for an election party. Erase your apathy with a little fun. It's
almost like watching the Super Bowl, but better. You can bet on who is going to
win, you can cheer, hiss or boo as election results are posted every 30 minutes.
You can have your own debates. And while all of this is going on, you can eat,
drink and be merry! (Don't think the candidates aren't doing the same thing!)
Invitation:
Use ours, it's free. Click here to see it
(984K PDF file; to view it, you must have the free Adobe
Acrobat Reader). You can download it at home on your color printer.
Created by the Party Girl just for Party411.com visitors, she apologizes in
advance for limiting the image to Bush and Gore (just in case of a landslide
for Buchanan or Nader). Don't forget to insert your name and address in the
space provided (unless you really don't want your friends to attend) and on
the back of the RSVP card so they can throw it in the mail.
For added fun, toss some red, white and blue confetti dots and/or red,
white and blue streamers into the envelope (not a lot or your friends will
hate you for sure).
Nametags:
I don't know about you, but there have been a few times I've forgotten that
not all of my guests know each other (and I never have time to do anything
about it). How about this? As your guests enter, give them each a patriotic
skimmer hat with their name written on the front on the striped red, white
and blue paper band. A creative touch, and it goes with the theme. They can
also throw it in the air when their candidate wins (or stomp on it when he
doesn't).
Decorations:
Start outside, of course. Instead of hanging Uncle
Sam on your door like everyone else would, attach him to a stick and put
him at the end of your walk. He's got joints so he'll blow in the wind. Put patriotic
bunting on your railing outside and add flag lights (little American flag
"b" lights).
Put up some tables for food and drink (and maybe a few for seating, but not
too many of those-boring!!) and use a mixture of solid red,
white and blue plastic tablecloths (inexpensive and the color makes the
room that much more festive). For the centerpiece, use red, white and blue Uncle
Sam Hi-Hats. Fill them with red, white and blue tissue and then add two
flag Mylar
balloons and one red, one white and one blue latex balloon (tied to a
balloon weight-balloon filled with water works great) coming out of the
center! Scatter red,
white and blue stars around the base.
Finish the table off with fabulous flag
plates, cups and napkins. Also, think about buying red
and blue plasticware. Fluff the napkin so that it comes out of the cup and
add the fork, spoon and knife. Use solid red
and blue plates for dessert. Fill miniature
Uncle Sam top hats (that match the centerpiece) with red and blue
M&Ms-put two on a table.
Finally, around the edges of the bars and buffets, put flag
banners (10" x 12") to tie everything together. Add flag picks
and mini-American
flags to your different dishes and maybe add a description to the flag:
"Avocado dip with onions--a Republican favorite!" It may be a
favorite of Democrats, too, but what do I know?
You're done, and it's fabulous! You are a patriotic fool and your friends
will love you for it!
Menu:
American flag cake-how hard can that be to make (or buy)? Serve red, white
and blue Jello-easily purchased at the local grocery and other American
favorites. Cheese Whiz and crackers? Not exactly, but close--fried chicken,
hot dogs, hamburgers, apple pie. Remember, try to keep with a patriotic theme.
I was once at a party where a woman turned a block of mozzarella into a
flag using red and blue edible stars. Now, that's creative! If you can make it
look like a flag, it's okay to serve! How about that for a rule of thumb?
Activities:
Well, you must have at least one poll during the evening. You can have
trivia about George W. and Al. You can ask people to bring political jokes and
do a "joke-off" between voting return reports. You can stage a
mini-debate. But nothing too serious or some of your friends may end up
leaving their sense of humor at the door, and you don't want that!
