Super Bowl XL decorations

It's been a long time since the first Super Bowl. I was much younger then. And I loved to eat (except then I burned it off) as much as I loved to watch the game. What game? There was a game? As far as I was concerned, it was an excuse to party!

It wasn't the same menu then as now, but you know what? It was less fancy, and I vote for some Cheese Whiz on crackers instead of trout pate on rice wafers!

"We love snacking today as much as ever," says Robin Kline, a registered dietitian and director of the Pork Information Bureau (PIB) for the National Pork Producers Council (NPPC). "But many parties now include more healthful dishes and foods that weren't familiar fare in the '60s -- like black beans, bulgur wheat, salsa and couscous." And where does Robin celebrate the Super Bowl, one asks?? Not on my block!

The National Pork Producers Council says that today, there are tasty alternatives to high-fat dips and chips--salsa and tortilla chips are the modern day equivalent to clam dip and potato chips. Well, I'm still eating clam dip--and salsa, too!

However, they have put together a list of the many popular foods that were replaced by newer treats over time (remember any?):

That Was Then

  • Potato chips and clam dip (made with sour cream and mayonnaise)
  • Cheese ball
  • California onion dip
  • Potato salad, cole slaw
  • Beef bourguignon
  • Cocktail franks in sauce
  • Chicken noodle casserole with potato chip topping
  • Dehydrated potato flakes
  • TV dinners
  • Creamy clam chowder
  • Cereal-based party mix (made with butter and garlic)
  • Guacamole
  • Brown-and-serve rolls
  • Powdered orange juice (just like the astronauts drink!)
  • Chocolate fondue with pound cake

This Is Now

  • Baked tortillas and salsa
  • Crispy hot nachos
  • Onion dip made with fat-free sour cream
  • Tabbouleh
  • Fajitas
  • Quesadillas
  • Tamale pie
  • Couscous
  • Stir-fry
  • White chili
  • Honey-mustard flavored pretzels
  • Fat-free bean dip, salsa
  • Spicy cornbread
  • All-natural fruit juices (with snappy names in individual bottles)
  • Frozen yogurt, sorbet

I for one am still eating most of what is listed in the "then" category. Tabbouleh, couscous and fat-free sour cream rarely touch these lips! And I am so proud.

Maybe this will give you some ideas on what to serve and what not to.

Have fun!
