Prom Guide To...
Corsage Etiquette

Wrist or pin? Wrist or pin?

That's the question of the hour when it's prom time.

Whether you are ordering the corsage for your date or hinting to your date what you want him to do as far as flowers go, it's important that you understand the difference between a wrist corsage and one you pin on.

Most ladies (and I use that word with the deepest respect) would rather have a wrist corsage than one you pin because a pin will sometimes leave a mark on their outfit. Depending on the material, pinning a corsage to tulle, chiffon, satin or other formal wear can be reason for dismay. And there she stands trying not to show it!

So when in doubt, a wrist corsage is best.

Color

Before ordering a corsage or when giving your date helpful hints, decide what color ribbon and color flower is appropriate. Of course, you'll want the corsage to match the outfit (check out the movie Grease and you'll see: pink dress, pink corsage; white dress, white corsage—so what if it was the 50's…some things never change).

Flowers

Think this isn't important? It is. I just got this lecture from a girlfriend of mine whose son went to the prom. She wouldn't let him buy his date sweetheart roses for her wrist corsage, and now he's very upset with her. She admits after talking with other moms that it was a big mistake. My advice? Do the sweetheart roses thing. It's doesn't cost that much more, and roses are still the most adored flower.

For an idea or two, go to 1-800-FLOWERS.COM and search "corsage." They have several choices that you can get from them or a local florist.

You know the expression: say it with flowers!
