Prom Guide To...
Decoration Ideas

There are all sorts of prom related items to consider, whether they go with your original theme or not. We’ve included some tips on decorating seating tables below, in case you are setting up tables for your guests!

Tiaras, scepters and king medallions. There are expensive tiaras, scepters and medallions and inexpensive ones. The expensive tiaras are perfect for your court but the inexpensive tiaras are great for decorating. Use them on buffets, soda bars, tables and/or hang them from the ceiling and watch them reflect the light.

Stars and hearts. They come in metallic, foil and cracked ice cut-outs (some with a hole punched through one end so you can hang them). They reflect the light from your band or DJ. Hang them anywhere and everywhere or attach them to walls (with removable double stick tape).

Balloons and streamers. A party isn’t a party without balloons and streamers. And a prom isn’t a prom without them either. They fill a room like nothing else can. Don’t waste time on walls, no one notices them. Fill the ceiling with balloons, the corners with balloon bouquets, and the hall with arches.

Of course, you can find balloons in all shapes and sizes, so you don’t have to stick with the regular stuff if you don’t want it. There’s star and moon shaped Mylars and balloons with your graduation year! In addition, there are balloons with prints--notes, leopard spots, top hats, dancers--or you can have them imprinted.

Atmosphere. Local prop companies will have all sorts of stuff you can use for your prom. Save money though and buy Christmas lights on sale to use on doorways, trees, walkways, etc. Use light ropes, icicle lights, even chasing lights shaped like stars to highlight any part of the room.

Consider a disco ball, revolving lights, a fog machine and other special effects—they aren’t as expensive as you think! And maybe for an ad in your program, you can get the effect donated.

You might also want to consider Mylar curtain; put it on walls to cover even the ugliest concrete or put up a backdrop and cover that with the curtain. Both work to add a shimmer to your event. These curtains of Mylar streams are available in any number of colors and even come as table skirts for a dessert or other buffet.

Table skirts, chair covers and table covers are available in your school colors as well. Don’t forget this simple finishing touch. There’s nothing more awful than an 8’ table (or any table for that matter) with no cloth!

Table Decoration Ideas

Centerpieces are easy to come by. Royal looking crowns make for great centerpieces. Just put them at the table center, and add balloon bouquets in your school colors.

Prom companies and companies like Party411 have pre-made centerpieces you can use. There are top hats, stars, palm trees, cut-outs and more. You should pick something that goes well with your theme or your colors. Also, you can sprays and garland to any centerpiece and make it that much more fabulous.

You won’t to forget to put confetti around the base of the centerpiece no matter what it is. You can buy it in school colors or you can use words, numbers, hearts and other shapes.

Fabulous glassware with your school logo, the date and the theme is another great addition.

Votive candles, also imprinted, can add a special glow to the night. They have them in martini glasses, small bowls and more! Add two to three per table.

At each setting place a beautifully wrapped keepsake set--a great frame or glitter frame imprinted with your school logo and/or a celebration glass or fabulous candle. You can sell these along with the tickets for additional funds. They come in all varieties—so it would be easy to match your school colors.

Around the napkin, use a key chain with your school logo, date and prom theme. These aren’t expensive, and they make great favors. If your budget doesn’t allow for a keychain, use garland in the theme of your choice (stars, bells, hearts and snowflakes).

Don’t forget place cards if you’re arranging seating for everyone. Many of the prom companies sell matching placecards, tickets and invitations—and even program covers—in your school colors.
