A Memorial Day Celebration

You can have the usual picnic or you can host something special. Which will it be?

Do you know why we celebrate Memorial Day? Well, a long time ago, a real long time ago, like in 1868, General John Logan proclaimed May 5th as Decoration Day. He wanted to remember all those who died protecting our nation. He ordered that flowers should be placed on the graves of all soldiers—Union and Confederate alike. Since World War I, Memorial Day (as it is now called), is celebrated on the last Monday in May throughout the country.

How do we celebrate this ceremonious occasion? Usually, with a parade. And why can't you? You can.  You can invite your friends to come on over and go by caravan to the closest parade. Or you can create your own. I vote for the latter.

Invitation

You can make your own or find them anywhere and everywhere. American flags abound on postcards, greeting cards, invitations and the like. Pick one you like, or ask Little Susie to draw you something on her computer (or freehand, God forbid), and take it to your local copy shop.

Activities

Have a parade. So what if it’s from your front yard to your back yard? Your guests will have a ball getting ready. Provide red, white and blue crepe paper; flags of all sizes, a toy drum and more. Let people make decorations and signs to carry (You provide the materials). Vote on who should be the Grand Marshal.  You should have a review stand with God Bless America banners displayed and maybe some velvet patriotic bunting.

We like decorating everything yourself. Lots of fun and allows for real creativity. But if you want to keep things a little more organized consider a Child's Wagon Float Kit. Everything you need to make your kid's wagon the talk of the parade.

Make sure everyone spreads the message.  Use God Bless America buttons or ribbons or spirit flyers to convey the message.
