Labor Day
[an error occurred while processing this directive]
Oh my. It’s that time again.
Already.
You have to start thinking about the kids going back to school.
And it’s the last real holiday before the fall.
Last year, I suggested a Labor Day
parade. This year, I suggest that you go the park and enjoy nature (It’s
something you don’t get to do when you’re laboring away at your job).
Location:
Your local metro park. Find a nice grassy knoll, where picnic tables
abound. Grills are there and ready, and there’s plenty of room for
volleyball, badminton or a great game of tag.
Shopping list:
Use everything disposable. Red checkered paper tablecloths. Paper plates
and napkins. Plastic cups and utensils.
Menu:
The main meal...hotdogs, hamburgers, buns for each, steaks (if your friends
are worth it); snacks....potato chips, pretzels; drinks...lemonade, Kool-Aid™,
pop, iced tea and, ice, of course. For dessert, make it easy on yourself: take
‘em to Dairy Queen after the picnic!
If you’re bringing a big cooler (too much labor for me, mind you),
bring dips for the potato chips. Maybe even go all the way and serve hors d’oeuvres
like spinach dip in a pumpernickel loaf and/or taco chips with sauce. Buy
pre-made salad (found in bags at your local grocery--all you need is dressing)
or potato salad and cole slaw.
For dessert, buy non-fat Jello™ pudding or that Swiss Miss™ Boston
Cream pie pudding.
Activities:
You can do the usual I mentioned above. Or get creative. After all, this is
what will make it fun. Here’s one game, as a suggestion:
Divide everyone into teams and come up with different competitions.
Examples include tug-of-war; burlap sack race; and time card relay. (In this
game, participants race to a point, write down the time and race back, handing
the time card to the next person.) Add your own game ideas, too.
Give each team a different color arm band to wear. Keep score. And give out
some great gag gifts--like the honor of hosting next year’s Labor Day
picnic!).
Have fun.
