So What is A Groundhog?
Yeah, so there is this holiday thing going on every year and no one ever
stops to think about the groundhog and his day-to-day existence. In case you
were wondering, I did some research, and now, the Party Girl is an expert!
Here's the short version:
- The groundhog is actually a woodchuck and a woodchuck is actually a
groundhog.
- They are native to North America and mostly found up north.
- They are considered shy so you won't see them approaching you for a chat.
- They tend to burrow in abandoned fields, having found out long ago that
Farmer Brown was not their friend.
- They are auburn-ish in color and their coat is furry.
- Their head is elongated and their teeth are sharp like Mike Tyson's.
- And, just like Mike, they have a "squat body, short legs and a solid
muscular frame."
- They dig and fight with the long claws that adorn their paws.
- They eat seeds, roots and plants.
- They are very nervous...do you think it's the food?
- They hibernate for a long time.
- Enemies include "eagles, snakes, bears, wolves, felines and
man."
Not a happy mammal would you say? So why do we celebrate Groundhog Day? I'm
not sure!
