Celebrate Groundhog Day
It happens every year. Punxsutawney Phil peeks out from his "hole"
and looks for his shadow. If, unfortunately for us northerners, he sees it, we
have six more weeks of winter waiting in the wings!
Invitations:
There are actually free Groundhog Day post cards you can send by e-mail at www.punxsutawneyphil.com.
Use them to invite your friends to your party. I kid you not. They have a
"Groundhogese Translator" in case you think your friends know
Groundhogspeak.
Decorations:
Request a chapter application (membership) form and start your own
Groundhog Club Chapter. Your friends can become "official" members.
Of course, you and your friends will have to agree to "perpetuate and
celebrate Groundhog Day robustly and heartily and forever defend and protect
the true weather prognosticator. Report your activities and events to the
Groundhog Club for the Groundhog Club Newsletter."
There's a minimal fee but oh what you get for it:
- An official Groundhog club Chapter Certificate, suitable for framing
- An official Groundhog Club Chapter Banner
- An autographed picture of the entire Groundhog Club Inner Circle (a true
collector's piece, sorry, only one per Chapter)
- Listing of your Club's activities, including pictures in the Newsletter
(mailed to each member)
- Free admission to Gobbler's Knob throughout the year upon presentation
of Membership Card (Entrance to Gobbler's Knob is free anyway, but we need
some use for the card).
- A surprise gift from PUNX'Y PHIL
Put up the banner, frame your Chapter Certificate and hang it on your front
door, blow up the autographed picture of the Groundhog Club Inner Circle and
put it on an easel in the front hall and you're almost there as far as décor
goes. Make a display of the surprise gift from Punx'y Phil and put candles
around it as a final touch!
For information, contact Ron Ploucha at the Punx'y Chamber of Commerce, 124
W. Mahoning St., Punxsutawney, PA 15767. Ron will let you know if there is
already a chapter in your area; if so, maybe you can go to their party.
Menu:
Seeds. Lettuce. Salad. All things a groundhog would like to keep up
appearances and be true to the theme. And then the regular stuff or your
friends won't be seeing you next February 2nd.
Activities:
You can show the movie Groundhog Day (Bill Murray is always a hoot) and sit
back and relax. Or you can make your own predictions. Tape the news (I'm sure
it will be on CNN), because chances are not too many of your friends will know
the truth.
Pull out the video camera, because there are some great songs at www.groundhog.org
that you can sing around a pretend hog hole: I'm Dreaming of the Great
Groundhog (to the tune of White Christmas) and Groundhog
Wonderland (to the tune of Winter Wonderland, of course!). Divide
your friends into 4s and make it a competition.
If kids are invited, you might want to visit www.groundhog.org
again for a complete Groundhog Day Celebration for the younger set. There's a
puzzle and a maze, a math message and even things to cut and color! And there
are some games that are really out there! Let's see, there's Toss the Hog
(become King or Queen of the Hog Tossers), Groundhog Bingo and more.
Favors:
Believe it or not, there is an official Punxsutawney Souvenir Catalog at www.punxsutawneyphil.com!
If you go to the celebration, you can visit them in person in Downtown
Punxsutawney. If not, you can buy some goodies for your friends as party
favors. "From hats and shirts to stuffed animals and lawn decorations,
this is the most comprehensive collection of Groundhog Day souvenirs on the
web!" says them.
Let's hope there aren't six more weeks of winter!
