Funky Holidays for June
Sneak a peek at July
Summer's almost here. If that ain't exciting, what is? School's out. Camp's
starting. Vacation is upon us. The sun is bright, the water's wet and the ideas
for parties are infinite.
June has lots to celebrate...for instance, did you know that it is:
- National Accordion Awareness Month
- National Candy Month
- Turkey Lovers Month
- Dairy Month
- Adopt-a-Shelter Cat Month
- National Iced Tea Month
- and, of course, Rebuild Your Life Month (now that's a thought...)
Well, you do now, but that's just the beginning. Try these out, too:
June 2:
Bahamas Labor Day - A great time for a reggae party, right?
Marquis de Sade's Birthday - Whether or not you're a sadist, you may
still want to celebrate this man's birthday. Each to his own.
June 3:
Chimborazo Day - According to Chase's Calendar of Events, this
is the day that publicizes that Mt. Chimborazo "pokes farther out into
space than any other mountain on earth..." Near the equator and located
in Ecuador, for some reason this proves that the Mississippi runs uphill. Go
figure.
Do-Dah Parade - A salute to silliness. Held in Kalamazoo, Michigan,
I'm sure they won't mind if you host your own. "Offbeat entries include a
precision grill team complete with spatulas"--get the drift? Sounds like
fun. For information, call
(269) 344-0111.
Casey at the Bat Anniversary - This was the day in 1888 that this
ballad was first printed in the San Francisco Examiner. Sounds like a great
day for a baseball-themed party.
Chuck Barris' Birthday - You remember him, he created the Gong Show,
the Dating Game and the Newlywed Game. All great themes for a party.
June 9 - Donald Duck's Birthday
Whoopee. Donald was born on this day in 1934. And he has entertained us
ever since. Have people come dressed as The Donald (either one works) and do
impressions. Give out prizes.
June 10:
Ball Point Pen Invented - Well, patented. Where would we be without
the ballpoint pen? I can't even imagine. No BIC? Invented by Hungarian Laszlo
Biro and "biro" in many languages means ballpoint pen. So there.
Wyatt Earp's Birthday - Sounds like it's time for a BBQ or square
dance! Wyatt loved to square dance, I know that for a fact.
June 14
Father's Day - Well, we have lots on the site about this but did you
know...Father's Day was the well-meaning creation of Mrs. John Dodd of Spokane
in 1910. Calvin Coolidge recognized the day when he was president, but it
wasn't until 1966 that it became actually proclaimed. Whew.
June 16 - Stan Laurel's Birthday
A great evening would be having people over to watch Laurel and Hardy
shorts. Have cake and ice cream and pretend you and Stan were best of buds.
June 17:
Iceland Independence Day - Oh yeah. Iceland was originally part of
Denmark and gained their independence in 1944.
Watergate Day - 1972. This is the day they arrested those Nixon-ites
for breaking, entering and promoting political espionage. Tricky Dick went
down.
June 18:
Meet a Mate Week Begins
A perfect afternoon singles event: celebrating "Meet a Mate"
Week. For information, Robin Gorman Newman at
rgnewman@optonline.net.
National Splurge Day - I kid you not. It says right here in Chase's
that "today is the day to go out and do something indulgent."
Whether you're a father or not, I assume. For information, adrienet@earthlink.net.
June 23 - Anniversary of the Typewriter
Wow.
June 24 - Premiere of Hopalong Cassidy
A western TV series that premiered in 1949. Some of the shows were
originally features but once on TV, they started producing additional shows.
He was a great guy.
June 30
Leap Second Adjustment Time - This is the day you subtract or add 1
second to your clock. This is necessary to coordinate atomic and astronomical
time and is made by the Central Bureau of the International Earth Rotation
Service in Paris.
Lena Horne's Birthday - Perfect day for a blues party. She is 83 and
was born in Brooklyn. And, as you know, she's a wonderful singer.
