Funky Holidays for January
Sneak a peek at February
If
you are not partied out from New Year's, January is a great month to force your
friends and family NOT to hibernate. Because it is a "down" month, it
doesn’t take much to pull off one great bash…for instance, according to Chase’s Calendar of Events, nationally January is…
- National Hot Tea Month - so it’s the perfect time to host a tea
party! Write to the Tea Council for information at 420 Lexington Avenue,
Suite 825, New York, NY 10170.
- National Glaucoma Awareness Month - for information, go to
www.preventblindness.org.
- National Book Month - for information on how to support reading in
our schools, go to www.nationalbook.org.
But there are also some great weekend things you can celebrate without too
much trouble. Like on…
January 5
All My Children Premiere - January 5, 1970. A long-running soap,
these daytime hits can make for one great event.
Inauguration of the First Woman Governor - it was Wyoming, it was
1925. It was Nellie Taylor Ross (Mrs. William B.) who made it to the mansion
going a long way for women’s rights.
January 6
Armenian Christmas - observed in the Armenian Church, the oldest
Christian national church and great for people who weren’t around on
Christmas Christmas.
Three Kings Day - another observance around Christmas, it is the
12th and last day of the Feast of the Nativity. More gifts, more food, more
lights!
Pro Bowler’s Tour Premiere - it was on this day in 1962 that the
first bowling tournament was televised. If you haven’t had your bowling team
over for drinks, you’ll strike big with this.
Wheel of Fortune Premiere - this show has been around since 1975.
Wow!
January 8
Elvis Presley’s Birthday
- is a great theme for a party at your house, no?
January 9
Great Fruit Cake Toss
- it’s in Manitou Springs, Colorado, but you can host your own. How hard could
it be? BYOF.
January 12
Premieres, Premieres, Premieres! - Let’s see, it was on this day
during different years that the following shows premiered: Batman, All
in the Family, The Bell Telephone Hour and Dynasty. Have
people over and watch re-runs if you can’t think of anything else!
Birthdays, Birthdays, Birthdays! - Kirstie Alley, Howard Stern, Rush
Limbaugh, Joe Frazier and Jeff Bezos all celebrate today (and so does Hal—the
computer in 2001: A Space Odyssey!)
January 13
Anniversary of 1st Radio
Broadcast - 1910. Where would we be without radio? Get some of those old radio tapes
and invite your friends to come listen!
January 19
Janis Joplin’s Birthday - she was something. I was there. Play her
tunes, watch The Rose, celebrate her life (and add Robert E. Lee and Edgar
Allan Poe to the cake ‘cause it’s their birthdays, too).
January 20
George Burns’ Birthday - another great somebody. The old tapes of
his shows and movies are something to see! He was 100 when he died in 1996,
but he lives on. And so does...
Fellini - he was born in 1920.
Penguin Awareness Day - Perky the Penguin is the mascot for this
event, and Perky wants you to know how important penguins are. Do it yourself
or go to Point Pleasant Beach, New Jersey, for a real celebration.
January 26
Patent of the Dental Drill
Anniversary - I don’t know about you, but I think this is a great idea for a Little
Shop of Horrors party! Patented in 1875, this tool has scared the pants
off us for over 125 years.
January 27
Thomas Crapper Day - this guy invented a sophisticated flush toilet
mechanism. In fact, he perfected it.
