Funky Holidays for January
Sneak a peek at February
If
you are not partied out from New Year's, January is a great month to force your
friends and family NOT to hibernate. Because it is a "down" month, it
doesn’t take much to pull off one great bash…for instance, according to Chase’s Calendar of Events, nationally January is…
- Bald Eagle Watch Month - in Cassville, Wisconsin (but who says you
can’t get your friends together with some binoculars and go look for
yourself wherever you live?).
- Bread Machine Baking Month
- sponsored by the
Bread Machine Industry Association. Can you even believe there is such a
thing? Get your friends together for some bread and dips and stuff (that’s
an invitation I wouldn’t ever turn down). Just break out the bread maker and
get some
great bread machine recipes.
- Fat Free Living Month - not a great party idea, I guess, but then
again it might be worth a taste-testing party. Check out www.fatfreeliving.com.
- Love Yourself Month - Dr. Ava Cadell of LA (where else) suggests
you love yourself, pamper yourself, cherish yourself and reward yourself
every day—so I suggest a spa party in honor of this occasion.
- International Get Over It Month - let go of the past, get over what’s
bugging you and chant "GET OVER IT!" to anyone who will take the
abuse. Invite your friends to come air their grievances (talking about it
helps get over it, right?) and you’ll have one interesting event!
- National Hot Tea Month - so it’s the perfect time to host a tea
party! Write to the Tea Council for information at 420 Lexington Avenue,
Suite 825, New York, NY 10170.
- National Mail Order Gardening Month - I swear! Have a garden
catalog exchange or a winter garden party—that would cheer anyone up. For
more information, go to www.mailordergardening.com.
But most importantly, it’s a great month to give! January is:
- National Poverty in America Awareness Month - for information,
write to Barbara Stephenson, CCHD, US Conference of Catholic Bishops, 3211
Fourth St. NE, Washington, DC 20017-1194.
- National Glaucoma Awareness Month - for information, go to www.preventblindness.org.
- National Eye Care Month - for information go to www.eyenet.org.
- National Book Month - for information on how to support reading in
our schools, go to www.nationalbook.org.
But there are also some great weekend things you can celebrate without too
much trouble. Like on…
January 5
Great Fruit Cake Toss - it’s in Manitou Springs, Colorado, but you
can host your own. How hard could it be? BYOF.
January 5
All My Children Premiere - January 5, 1970. A long-running soap,
these daytime hits can make for one great event.
Elvis Presley’s Birthday Celebration - the beginning of a 4-day
Elvis celebration in Memphis (www.elsvis-presley.com)
is a great theme for a party at your house, no?
Inauguration of the First Woman Governor - it was Wyoming, it was
1925. It was Nellie Taylor Ross (Mrs. William B.) who made it to the mansion
going a long way for women’s rights.
January 6
Armenian Christmas - observed in the Armenian Church, the oldest
Christian national church and great for people who weren’t around on
Christmas Christmas.
Three Kings Day - another observance around Christmas, it is the
12th and last day of the Feast of the Nativity. More gifts, more food, more
lights!
National Smith Day - yep. Smith is the most popular name in the
English-speaking world and, I don’t know about you, this seems like
something that could be great fun whether you know a Smith or not!
Pro Bowler’s Tour Premiere - it was on this day in 1962 that the
first bowling tournament was televised. If you haven’t had your bowling team
over for drinks, you’ll strike big with this.
Wheel of Fortune Premiere - this show has been around since 1975.
Wow!
January 12 through Sunday, January 14
See the January Party Professor Column
for more information!
Fire the Boss Week - Sounds like a party to me!
Premieres, Premieres, Premieres! - Let’s see, it was on this day
during different years that the following shows premiered: Batman, All
in the Family, The Bell Telephone Hour and Dynasty. Have
people over and watch re-runs if you can’t think of anything else!
Birthdays, Birthdays, Birthdays! - Kirstie Alley, Howard Stern, Rush
Limbaugh, Joe Frazier and Jeff Bezos all celebrate today (and so does Hal—the
computer in 2001: A Space Odyssey!)
January 13
Anniversary of 1st Radio
Broadcast - 1910. Where would we be without radio? Get some of those old radio tapes
and invite your friends to come listen!
January 19
International Sing Out Day - instead of talking, you are urged by
Adrienne Sioux Koopersmith to sing your conversations. This happens to be the
Everly Bros.’ birthday as well. For information, write Adrienne at adrienne@21stcentury.net.
Janis Joplin’s Birthday - she was something. I was there. Play her
tunes, watch The Rose, celebrate her life (and add Robert E. Lee and Edgar
Allan Poe to the cake ‘cause it’s their birthdays, too).
January 20
George Burns’ Birthday - another great somebody. The old tapes of
his shows and movies are something to see! He was 100 when he died in 1996,
but he lives on. And so does...
Fellini - he was born in 1920.
Penguin Awareness Day - Perky the Penguin is the mascot for this
event, and Perky wants you to know how important penguins are. Do it yourself
or go to Point Pleasant Beach, New Jersey, for a real celebration.
Inauguration Day - Are
you happy that Bush is out or Obama is in? You pick what to celebrate. Check
out our inauguration party ideas.
January 26
Patent of the Dental Drill
Anniversary - I don’t know about you, but I think this is a great idea for a Little
Shop of Horrors party! Patented in 1875, this tool has scared the pants
off us for over 125 years.
January 27
Thomas Crapper Day - this guy invented a sophisticated flush toilet
mechanism. In fact, he perfected it.
