Raise money for a wedding

So let me get this strait. The couple has enough money to buy an engagement ring, but can't afford the wedding. So, they ask their friends to host a party for them where money is raised to "pay for a wedding", to which guests bring even more gifts. If this is a "fundraiser" for their wedding, do they donate their wedding gifts to charity afterwards? How do you raise money at this party? Why does she want to spend money on prizes, if she is trying to make money? Do you have to host a bridal shower as well? I'm sorry but I have never heard of such an event, if you could fill me in I would appreciate it. Are these parties popular in your town?
