Growing up in Brooklyn NY we lived on macaroni (not pasta). When planning you figure on 1/4pound per person and a "pinch". The pinch you add determines what else is being served. I always make a pound and a 1/4 for 4 people this way guests can feel free to take a plate full without fear of taking it all. I never used jarred sauce, only homemade sorry I can't help w/that part.
