I like surprises. If they don't surprise me, I want them to plan it. I think it's tacky to be part of your own birthday party planning. You should get a date and location, then come up with a theme. Once you have a theme you can plan your food, decoration, eating supplies, invitations, etc. I would definately accept help if it is offered. A couple of ideas for themes are:
70's - There's plenty of items in the party stores in the kids birthday sections with tie dye and smile faces... invites, plates, decorations, etc. You could also go to the Good Will and Salvation Army stores and find old clothes and items to decorate with. I would look through the old albums...they'd make great decorations. You can have disco or other music popular in the 70's.
You could even have your guests dress up in clothes from that time or as people or television characters popular at that time. ie: Nixon, the Sweat Hogs, Charlies Angels, etc.

Over the Hill - Again, party stores are a great resource. You can also do it your self with a lot of black. The cake could be baked in an oven safe bowl. Place it on a plate or board with the flat side down. Frost it making sure to leave peaks. Before the frosting sets sprinkle bread crumbs over it. With a tube of black or her favorite color, write youth one side and Happy Birthday Jane on the other. You could also make small foot steps starting on the youth side and get a small plastic figurine with your wife's hair color on the other side. You can find the figurines in the cake isle at the party or craft stores. The cake ofcourse, is the hill.

The last will and testament of her youth - This is a great version of the over the hill party. You could decorate very much the same. A couple of ideas for the invitation are as follows: Use a newsprint style font on your computer and type an obiturary of her youth. ie:
Jane Doe's Youth, 30(The header in bold)
Jane Doe's Youth, 30 of "your address" passed "her birthday". There will be a reading of Youth's last will and testament on "date of party" at "time of party". Executor of the estate is "Your name and whoever else is throwing the party with you". Your presence is requested at the reading. Mourning attire suggested. Please contact executor at "phone # and/or email address".
Print it out on newsprint, math paper, or doodle paper. Basically anything that'll look like newspaper. You could probably copy paste this several times on the same sheet of paper. Just cut them out to look like clippings. You could also print the last 3 lines on a separate sheet of normal computer paper instead of on the obit and cut it down as an insert. I would put the name of the executor on the obit and the insert.

For the reading of the Last will and Testament you just come up with several of her hobbies and things she likes. You come up with someone young in the family or famous within that category and leave the items used for that hobby to the younger person. ie: Jane leaves her tennis raquet to Anna Kournikova who is still young enough to see the ball coming at her.
Try to come up with a silly or cute remark for each item. If you need help, just post again with the hobbies you want to use and we'll try to help.
Who ever does the reading should pass around a box of tissue first and be overly sobby. Making it obviously fake is funnier. This is a fun occasion that your pretending is sad. The guests will play off of the reader. If you have a lot of small children, this might not be a good theme.
You can make the same cake as the over the hill or make it more like your invitation or have pictures of the items on the will put on it. I hope you have a great time what ever you choose.
