Nicole's invite idea is good, you could shape invitations like little crock pots and print some cute and easy recipies inside. Or you could make the food a theme, bring a famous family dish, everyone's got that "Famous Smith family gumbo" or something. Or you could have an international theme, everyone brings a food (be it appetizer, dessert or main dish) from a particular nation.
