Our White Elephant games go like this:
Everyone that brought a gift (can be a good gift or a stupid one) draws a number out of a hat. When it's time to open presents, we begin calling numbers from 1 to whatever. The person who had number 1 goes to the tree (or presents pile) and picks a gift and opens it. Then person number two can either take person one's gift or choose one of their own from the pile. If person number two chooses the gift previously opened by person number one, then person number one goes back to the pile and chooses another. Our main rules: We only allow a gift to change hands up to three times and if you want to steal a gift, you have to do it before you pick one from the pile. Some people think that the best numbers to draw are the highest but I like the ones in the upper-middle. That way, if you want to steal something good, you might still have a chance before it has been traded three times! Good luck!
