We just had a surfing party/luau murder mystery birthday party! We used beach buckets for our serving bowls for chips, popcorn, and fruit (lots of tropical fruits.) We found some funny kids' inflatables (beach balls and waist floaters shaped like animals) and used those in spots around the room to create atmosphere. We also made a palm tree centerpieces from paper towel, wrapping paper, and mailing tubes painted for the trunks and green tissue paper over old wire dry cleaner hangers for the leaves. The hooks held them nicely in place in the tubes with some tape, and we hung one from the ceiling where we usually have a plant. I have seen similar things in party stores. We also used grass skirting on our fireplace mantel, which was decorated with real coconuts and pineapples. For the birthday cake, we used fish shaped votive candles and a toy surf board on a blue cake with "waves" icing. We played one of the "ocean waves" tapes in the bathroom with a smaller palm tree. We also made a fake surf board on a wave out of two large pieces of white floral styrofoam (the 4 foot sections.) We very lightly spray painted it because paint eats through styrofoam if you completely coat it until wet. The wave was a pyramid with white at the top to look like a crest. The green "board" had a small notch cut out of the bottom. We filled it with glue and stuck it at an angle to the "wave." It was great. If I had thought of it, I would have used black balloons as "coconuts" on my "palm trees."
