Hi Harriet!

Sounds like a fun 50th birthday party!

Here are a couple of ideas. Use beach towels as table covers or to let your friends sit on to have a "picnic" which is especially fun if the party is indoors and helps to add to the atmosphere. You also can buy inexpensive straw mats at an import store.

Get a child's wading pool to fill with ice and use as a container to serve the drinks.

Use sand buckets as your "bowls" for the food. The sand "tools" can be used as serving pieces. You also can use the brim of a straw beachcomber hat to serve chips and pretzels in. You can nestle a bowl of dip in the crown too!

If you can, use beach umbrellas around the area. If you only have one and it's an indoor event, set the umbrella inside a large bucket of sand and place that on your buffet table. (You probably won't have to use the "extension" piece since the umbrella will be high up.)

Hang votive candles in holders (or small lanterns) from the umbrella'struts for more atmosphere.

Another thought would be to get a surboard and suspend it from two sawhorses to use as the buffet table or "bar."

Wallpaper stores (and prom supply companies) have murals of beach scenes. Make a backdrop (you can attach it to plan boards or sheetrock if you don't want to tape it to your real walls) prop it against wall, have everyone have their picture taken in front of it, posing next to a surfboard (or wearing an inflatible beach toy, a beachcomber hat, and silly oversized sunglasses) and give to your guests in an inexpensive holder or decorate some frames from the dollar store with seashells, as a memento of the party. You either can use an instant camera or mail to your guests after the party with their "thank you" note.

I think the party will leave your husband feeling "good vibrations" about hitting the big 5-0!

Kowabunga and enjoy!
