The parties that I've gone to, the gifts were gifts that were given to you that you
never used or liked. That's what makes it a "White elephant".
I've seen small porcelain statues to elaborate shower moisturizing
appliances. I once got stuck with a 3 pack of tall pantyhose. I'm 5'3"!
I would definitely not go out and spend money on a gift. If I had
to, I would go to a yard sale, Pic-n-Sav or a 99 cent store. Someone's
white elephant is another's treasure!
All the gifts were placed in the center and you pick a number
from a bowl (the numbers are written on a piece of paper and the paper
is folded). When all have arrived, the person with the number 1
gets first pick at the gifts in the center. The next person # 2
can take # 1's gift or choose one from the center and the same for
the following #'s. The last person has the best number because he/she
gets to check out all the gifts and has less chance of losing the gift
of choice. That's when it starts getting exciting!
