Another alternative to a sign-in board (yes, I too have two of them currently residing in my basement) is a srapbook. I am just finishing up my daughter's. I have been working on it since May. Each page has pix of her in a different them (i.e baby pix, with cousins, a memory page of her with her Zaida, with kids she babysits, with her friends, etc.) Every few pages is a blank page in which everyone can leave a message. The pix pages will be in plastic protectors, the signing pages not. If you have the time this is a great keepsake. It is something that your daughter will have to show her kids.
