You are not only embarking on your journey to becoming a young man but you are also officially taking your place as a member of the Jewish community. I am very proud of you. I know how hard you have worked to become a Bar Mitzvah. Watching you lead the service today has been a very moving experience for all of us. This occasion makes me look both backward with fond memories and forward with great hopes for your future. It wasn’t long after you learned to read that you became interested in geography and reading maps. Before we had global positioning systems, we had you, as our designated navigator. You have given me the chance to experience curiosity through your eyes and voice. Your demanding to know what words mean and how things work has kept me on my toes. You have a great mind, an excellent memory and an unusual sense of direction. You are content with your own company and I admire you for that. Maybe most endearing, though, is your compassion and kindness to others. You have a good understanding of right and wrong, and I hope you never lose that. A lot of people in the sanctuary today were here at my wedding. Some are not here today that were here then including my father, your zaidie, whose light shines everywhere today. Also Poppa and Grandma who would have been delighted by the person you are becoming just as Baubie is delighted and proud. I hope I have done my part to instruct you in the ways of a Jewish family and to encourage you to trust your instincts and abilities. You have been blessed with good health and many gifts and I know that you will do your best to make good use of them. You have much to pass on to your sisters as they approach their 13th birthday, and much to teach your father and me about perseverance. I hope you will always seek new challenges in your life and that as you do you never lose your compassion. Finally, remember I love you, appreciate you and will celebrate you always.
