I remember the days when there were no themes (am I dating myself?!) For my brother's Bar Mitzvah, my mom picked the colors yellow and navy, and did all the flowers, decorations, invitations, clothes, etc. in those two colors. Maybe you can pick your son's favorite colors and go from there...
