Denise - Have all Kipot in a basket at the doors to the sanctuary with your son's Bar Mitzvah invitation attached - this is a sign to all congregants that these are reserved for your guests. I have seen this done MANY times, and did it at our own simcha. Be sure to save one for yourself. Also, print about 25-50 more than you think you'll need. Re: candlelighting - how about flags of Isreal for each honoree to "plant" in the birthday cake? How about gift certificates attached to small trees in honor of a tree planted for them in Isreal. We've seen humorous "award ceremonies" instead of candlelighting, with each honoree given a small trophy (for best all-round car-pooling) for example. Mazel tov.
