Specific customs vary by Temple. If the temple is
a conservative jewish temple then the service
will be longer and perhaps a bit more formal.
Reform jewish services tend to last 1 to 1 1/2
hours in duration. However, regardless of temple
affiliation, I am certain that you will find the
service very beautiful and touching. Now, to
answer your questions!

Attire for the occassion is semi formal. Suits
and ties for the men, dresses for the ladies. Ladies
can never go wrong with black, dark blue, or other
formal business type colors. Dress as if you are
going to the theater to see an expensive show. Furs
are not only politically incorrect, but also overkill!
The only true ceremonial activity that you will
encounter is the Kiddish. This is the prayer over
wine and the breaking of challah (braided bread).
The only thing to remember is do not drink until
after the prayer and do not eat the bread until
after the prayer. After the prayers, it is very
similar to a wedding or any other festive event.
As for gifts, the number (chai) 18 is considered to
be a lucky number. So if giving money, $18, $36, or some
other multiple of 18 is an appropriate gift.

Good luck and enjoy! Witnessing the passing down
of 3600 years of tradition is a truely wonderful
event.
