This is what I did and the only "no shows" was one friend of my son's (she was sick, I didn't know her, but then heard really sleezy things about her after the fact, so....) and a couple came to the service and then did not come to the party immediately following because, lucky for me, my son's barmi was the Sat. in Feb. between the 2 huge snowstorms when we had flooding problems and my friends basement was flooded..so I understood. Anyway, once I received the response cards from his friends or any of my non-Jewish friends, I sent out a letter explaining what to expect...I got it from this board. Close to the time of the big day, I emailed friends of his and mine, but I never did the phone call thing...too much work. Another thing that I did, after then event, since mine was the first in the circle of his friends, was to send letters to all of his friends thanking them for how well behaved they were. I had heard of nightmare stories here and elsewhere, and I was so thrilled at how these kids behaved, that I just wanted them to know it. Perhaps the parents appreciated the letter more than the kids????
Anyway, that was just my experience. Good luck.
