My son's bar mitzvah was fantastic! (long)

Wow,
We have been home a few hours from my son's party and it was great. Yesterday, he read from the Torah and his Haftorah beautifully.I think he was less nervous than I was. Considering all the problems we had with him (healthwise) and that we almost had to cancel, it all worked out beautifully. His current medication makes him fall asleep around 10:30 and he actually did doze off at that time, but I don't think anyone knew except us and the rabbi, who knew about this problem anyway. He spoke about his hebrew name and his portion and brought tears to my eyes. I could hardly get through my speech and started to cry. (I cry really easily anyway!) The rabbi was wonderful. He is new to our synagogue and everyone loves him. He always give 110% and is always very personal with the bar mitzvah child. I don't know how he does it week after week, but I have seen him do this time and again. The bima flowers were actually baskets of beautiful flowering plants and shrubs, like lilacs and hydrangea, which were arranged around the pulpits. Our florist was a friend of the family who offered to do this for us a present. It went very well with Shavuot, which I had tried to incorporate into our decorations and celebrations.Afterwards, we had a dairy kiddish which was lovely also. Then we went home to rest. The out of town guests came over for a dinner provided by my folks and today we had a catered party with about 90 guests which worked out very well. Our dj was fantastic and made the whole party. Everyone was up and dancing, including my 94 year old grandma who had fallen down 2 days ago and is now in a wheelchair due to her bruised leg. Even with all our upset and worry about her condition, it was a joy to have her there and see her celebrate with us. She actually did the limbo and the conga and the hora from her wheelchair! It was great and added so much to my happiness to share this day with her.
There are so many more details that worked out beautifully, like the Nintendo theme, the favors and party bags and centerpieces, thanks to all the help from this board. The only bad parts were that my mother in law decided on her own that she wanted to change the table arrangements and crossed out table numbers for 3 tables and rewrote as she saw fit! I don't even want to tell you what I said to her when the maitre d' told me she had done that! Also, my parents decided to make a lovely and touching speech during the candlelighting without asking us first so everything came to a grinding halt for about 10 minutes. If they had asked, I would have found a better time for them to speak and I would have offered my mother in law the same opportunity, since it always very important for us to be evenhanded with our folks. The candlelighting poems I wrote were a big hit and everyone asked me who had done them! I modestly took full credit, of course! Overall, it was a wonderful weekend full of love and pride and happiness. I can now start thinking about my next bar mitzvah, I guess, but I don't think I can top this one, so I hope we have as good a simcha. I hope my grandma will be there at 98, still doing the limbo and the hora and I will hide those placecards til the very last second! Sally
