I am coming to completion on my parents surprise 25th - first, talk to as many trusted family members as possible, from both sides of the family. This will help you compile a starter guest list, which would be helpful to have when choosing a place to have the party, and it will help you set a budget, etc etc.

Once you choose the place you can go from there but the guest list is always the hardest part and the longest work too - its hard to keep it affordable without people getting offended.
