I think that asking for money is always tacky, regardless of how attractively you do it (Money trees, money dance, wishing well, whatever) Doing a potluck is ok, especially if it's all family or if it is usually in your crowd. I like to set the room up like spokes of a wheel with the honorees seated at the center. Do drinks/ appetizers first, then entertainment, then dinner, if you are serving that, Then any presentations or cerimonies you have in mind, finish with cake.
