We're putting together the same type of thing for my parents - catered party, lots of people. Etiquette-wise, it's appropriate for the childrens of the anniversary couple to pay for the party and guests should not be asked to pay for their own meal! If you can't swing it, you're better off doing a smaller event. Lots of people host an open house for the couple and can then make lots of finger food themselves.
