Have a family meeting to discuss if it's not going to be a surprise party. We just had a 50th anniversary party for my parents and my parents paid for most of it. (My brothers put in some money, but my parents put in the lion's share.) I did all of the leg work, such as getting the food, cake, decorations, etc. (My contribution was my time which is equally valuable. I had about two weeks to put it all together for 50 invited guests.) My mother sent out the invitations (very late) that one of my brothers did on his computer using the photo of my parents cutting their wedding cake. On party day, I had help decorating the party room we had rented and serving the food (I was "head waitress"). My parents did not seem in any way upset or insulted over contributing to their party. It was a true family affair! One piece of advice I will stress is: get your invitations out early to get a (somewhat) accurate head count way in advance of the event. Also add in extra for cushion. Not having an accurate head count is hard to work with. (I did not get the head count until two days before the party. Please, don't let that happen to you.) Give yourself a lot of time to prepare so the stress level will be low.
