Hello everyone, I just wanted to say THANK YOU to this forum! I began reading the postings here sometime last summer looking for tips on what to do for my parents 50th Anniversary. I got so many ideas, and I am so grateful because I pulled off a fantastic party and couldn't be more pleased! I would like to recap for you. I live 600 miles away from my parents, and have two brothers, one single who lives by me, and one married with too much personal stuff going on to be much help. I was on my own. I booked a banquet room at a Hilton, had my brothers vote on the menu. I printed our invitations at home (I bought a wedding invitation kit from Office Depot), ordered napkins to be printed, and ordered a cake sight unseen (the bakery came recommended from the hotel). All turned out beautiful. I went to the dollar store and bought clear vases, wrapped a gold ribbon around the neck and tied a bow. Then at Michaels I found gold hydranga bushes and put two flowers in each vase, filled the bottom with irredescent shredded paper and set them on gold doileys. The women loved them, and I told them to take them home if they wanted one (a big hit!) My 17 yr old son and I wrapped two gold hershey nuggets in tulle, tied them with gold wire, and my son shaped each wire into a heart, then hot glued a gold 50 on each. (We made one for each guest) I also printed out the poem Bands of Gold and put two on each table. My 17 year old put together a power point presentation on 50 Years Together, complete with my parents special songs and we played it on repeat on a laptop at the party. I made several poster boards with 50's trivia, slang words, advertising samples ect. and displayed them. I also enlarged my parents wedding photo and displayed it along with their wedding invitation, napkin, and my mothers wedding dress and purse. My mom designed her own wedding dress and had it made for her. I also wore it at my wedding 20 years ago. I unpacked it and displayed it on a sewing maniquin (on top of a table to show off the 5ft train) We also put the Christing gown on display that my brothers and I all wore, as well as each grandchild. My two brothers gave a wonderful speech, and the grandchildren presented my parents with The Love Kit, that I got from this site. I printed it on gold paper. I also hired a photographer to take family portraits and candids throughout the party. My parents only knew there was going to be a party, and they made up the invitation list. Everything else was a suprise. My sons (17 and 15) picked them up at their home to drive them to the party in my car. We had tied a huge sign on the back that read "Married 50 Years Ago". They were so surprised and happy. It was a very special day for our family, one that we will remember forever. As a side note, my dad had emergency open heart surgery 6 weeks before the party. We are so blessed to have him still with us, he is doing great! Thank you all again. I am so glad I found you!
