Well, I survived my in-laws' 50th anniversary party! It was August 12, and I made it a luncheon from 11 a.m. to 3 p.m. They were thrilled (it was not a surprise), and now I'm getting calls for jobs to do party planning for other people! (which I decline) Yikes! lol Here are a few things that I did:
- Displayed my mother-in-law's gown and headpiece (no veil)
- Next to the gown, I had a cake, with a knife that I had decorated. I made a three-tiered lemon cake with lemon curd between the layers. This was NOT hard at all. I used a cake mix, and jarred curd. I did buy the special pans at a craft store, and I used a buttercream frosting that you make from scratch, which was so easy, my husband helped make it! I frosted the cake, used two old-fashioned man and woman golfer figurines (bought in a Halllmark shop) that I put atop an inverted gold spray-painted sm. candle bowl.(Made it look like they were standing on a gold golf ball!) Then to decorate, I used the small paper roses and paper rose buds that you can find in any craft store in the wedding isle. It looked gorgeous (if I don't say so myself!).
- I borrowed/stole pictures from my in-laws and scanned them. With some I did a large multi-cutout matted frame. . .I printed out the photos on photo-quality paper (bought at a wholesale warehouse store). From their wedding album, I scanned the photos, put them in white mats and stenciled with a gold metallic pen. There were 7 of these 8x10" photos, and I scattered these around the room, like at the cheese tray, near the disc jockey, etc.
- I wrote a "story" about how the couple met, got engaged, had a family. Kinda funny and cute, with a few pictures. I did this by spray-painting (can you tell I like to spraypaint? It's easy!) regular paper just barely with gold paint and then printed the "story" onto it. I mounted these pages on one of those "project boards" that you get at office supply stores or a craft store.I did the board up like a scrapbooking page, with pictures and I used wrapping paper as mats for the pages.
- I sneaked into my in-laws' basement and "borrowed" some of their old 8mm films and had 11 of them put onto video. I then had that video played constantly on a table at the party. It was a silent movie, lasted about 45 mins. and I decorated the table with a photo and rose wraped with tulle ribbon.
- I put personalized-wrapped mints into a bowl. I think this is probably the one expense that I'd re-think, even though everyone loved it.
- For the favors, I bought the 4 packs of 1.87ml wine. Since there were children invited, I made small water bottles for them. I made computer labels that said "Bob and Lorraine's 50th Anniversary" etc. with the kind of wine. On these bottles, I made little tulle bundles with three little chocolate balls wrapped in foil that look like golf balls, and I had spray-painted golf tees gold and put two of those peeking out of the tulle. I bought a roll of that personalized ribbon that said "Bob and Lorraine 50th Anniversary" and had that with it and tied the tulle bundles on.
- I found a zillion quotes about love on the internet and printed those out on business cards that had gold stripe. I added a gold rose and tulle ribbon. I put one of these at each place setting.
- I scanned a photo of their wedding portrait, cropped it to only see shoulders and head and printed a love quote over the photo. I printed out 7 of these (one for each table) and put them into frames. It looked great, and everyone was SO impressed. I didn't tell them how easy it was!
- For the centerpieces, I made topiaries. I bought for $3each at a craft store, square terra cotta planters (about 8"x8"x8"). I spray painted them gold, and used that crackle paint stuff with white paint over them. I then made topiaries, white silk roses with those little gold ribbon roses peeking out, and gold ribbon. At the base, I used that white shredded tissue and some gold shredded metallic stuff that's for gift bags. Also, ivy running up the "trunk".

I found a disc jockey (he cost $375) that had a music library beginning from the 1930 to present. I asked that he ONLY play music from 1930 - 1951, plus some country songs. I did have my in-laws do the cut-the-cake thing with the bride/groom kisses as well! At first, I thought it would be hokey, but everyone LOVED it! They then danced to "The Anniversary Waltz".

I'd be more than happy to help anyone who needs suggestions. I had so many ideas, but didn't want to overdo it at this party! lol
