Carol,

Stop feeling so guilty about missing their 25th. :) I'm sure they don't feel as badly about it as you do.

Okay, there are a couple of ways of handling this. You can go for the "joke" and do a "I'm A Terrible Daughter for Not Celebrating My Parent's Silver Anniversary Party"; or, "I May Have Missed Their Silver Anniversary, but They're Gold to Me"; or, "Jim & Joan's 25th +1 Anniversary Party"; or just don't bring it up and give them a great party.

Do all the things you might have done last year. Go to a color copy store and have them enlarge a wedding picture of your parent (even if it's black and white, the image comes out better on a color copier) and mount it on a board with a wide border. At the party, ask your parent's family and friends to sign their wishes to them and then have it framed.

You can contact the guests or people that won't be able to come and ask them to write a letter to your parents or send photos of them with their friends. Then make up an album of these to give to your parents.

Do you have a video camera? Go around town, the mall, construction sites, any strange place you can think of, and see if you can get people to record "wishes" or "memories" of your parents. Then show it at the party. It will be very funny because these will be complete strangers to your parents! (I know it sounds strange, but I've done it before and it's a riot. I even was able to get a construction worker to do it on his way out of the Jiffy John!)

Do use silver in your decorations, but you might want to add another color as an accent.

Many bakeries will put an edible photo on their cake for just a couple of dollars more. Check around in your area.

Or, you can throw a party with a hippy theme to represent when they were married. Actually, 1973 is an odd year because it was the end of the Age of Aquarius and the beginning of disco.

Check around some sites or you can get a computer program (or an Almanac) that will give you all the things that happened in 1973.

Go to the library and get a copy of the newspaper on their wedding day. Most have them on mircofiche and you can make a copy for under a dollar. Make copies of the front page, the sports page, what movies were playing, etc.

Hope that gives you some thoughts. Good luck!
