It is really tacky. I am also planning a dinner in July (100+) guests - luckily I found a mom and pop restaurant (with nice decor and a lot of room and good food) in which the owners will do practically anything to get this going without a hitch. The prices are a lot better than hotels, etc. ALSO, my parents went on a date there before their marriage. You may need to consider this option and PLEASE take into account what type of people your parents are - for instance my parents are relatively simple people, therefore, a crazy 8 course sit down was out of the question.
