It depends. Is this an occasion where the couple is expecting gifts? If so, I'd be against it. If, on the other hand it is a fun sort of pre-party, it could be a real kick. For the latter, the hostess should make it clear on the invitation that this is a just-for-fun party and no gifts are expected.
