40th bday on a budget...sick of the usual

My husband will turn 40 soon and I'd like to throw him a really great bash. We've been to a few 40th bdays this year and all we did was stand around and talk. I want my husbands birtday to be the one that no one forgets. Problem is the budget doesn't allow for any kind of professional entertainment or decorating. Any ideas?
