Hi, I'm the seventh of ten children and our parents are celebrating their 50th anniv. this month. I was trying to do the same type of thing with a 1948 theme. I got a cassette tape of music from the 40s and 50s, I also copied a bunch of pictures from my Encarta to hang around the room, pictures of Fred Astaire, Joe DiMaggio, Judy Garland...Or you could use the military theme, look for pictures of the Andrews Sisters, Eisenhower, Churchill, DDay. Another fun (but expensive) thing I did for my husbands 40th birthday was take a bunch of pictures to KMart and enlarged them to 8x10's and hung those around the party room, over the buffet, etc.
Good Luck & Have Fun!
Also got a good idea from my 5 year old for a 'golden' gift. When I asked her what could we get that was gold, she started speeling off 'gold' things, Golden Grahams, gold jewelery... we're giving them a basket of anything 'gold' in the name - i.e. golden oldies, goldenrod, golden retriever, golden honey...
