Chanukah Party Ideas

Matzoh Ball

This is and has always been a great idea! It can be a fundraiser if you choose. Use a drawing of a matzoh ball for the invitation and RSVP. Decorate with giant matzoh balls hanging over the dance floor and in other appropriate places. Blue and white sparkle/winter stuff is great to decorate, too. Have a wall of matzoh balls with names of those who donated. Let your imagination go!

Chanukah Gift Exchange

Well, since those celebrating Chanukah get eight gifts, one for each night, you have to make sure that you're clear on your invitation or people will be afraid to come because eight gifts can be a hefty chunk of change.

Ask people to bring something with a "Jewish" theme as a gift: small books, mezuzahs', chocolate. Check out the gift shop at your local Jewish Community Center for ideas. They have gifts of all shapes, sizes and prices!

Menorah Auction

A great fundraiser, this event can raise a lot of money for your organization. Just like "Trees of Life" where decorated Christmas trees are auctioned off that have been provided by local nurseries and artists, your group can get local artists to donate menorahs to be auctioned off. As well, you can get corporate sponsors for menorahs to be purchased from different vendors. Display them for a week and then have a paid reception where you auction them off silently. It is a great event and a great way to celebrate Chanukah, too.

Chanukah Cookie Party

Dreidel cookies and Star of David cookies are easy to make. Throw together a few batches and then invite everyone to come over and decorate (then taste). Ask people to bring their favorite cookie recipe so they can exchange it with others and a sample, too, if they'd like. Fun for both adults and kids.

Chanukah Sing-Along

When is the last time you belted out, "Dreidel, dreidel, dreidel, I made it out of clay!"? Huh? Probably long ago. Get the words to Chanukah songs and have a sing-along.

Jewish Joke Exchange

Sadie and Irving were a happy couple. Mostly because there are about 1,000,000 jokes about them. Invite people over for latkes and jokes! You'll be rolling in the apple sauce and sour cream!
