special gift ideas please!
Nov 04th, 2009, 9:31am

Help!!! I need ideas & suggestions for a *special* bat mitzvah gift for a relative. I really don’t want to write a check as I’d like to do something more personable. I already know some people are getting her jewelry from Tiffanys, and I’m at a loss for something special and appropriate for a 13-year old.

My brother in law and sister in law started my two triplet daughters out with Pandora bracelets, and added some beads to each. This is something they will have forever. It also gave other people who asked what to get them the opportunity to buy more beads toward completing their bracelets.

Depending upon how much $ you would like to spend, I know that 13 year olds are very in computers.  If several families chipped in for a laptop or digital camera that could be a very special and appreciated gift.  Also depends upon what the child enjoys.... Just my two cents.

I just ordered a jewelry box online that you can design and also engrave. They are really pretty. Its a company called Kyle Designs. Depending on what  you spend you can do that and then put jewelry in it.

A Gary Rosenthal menorah?  If your relative is likely to read Torah again, a yad, or a tikkun (book with the Torah readings, facing pages, 1 side with vowels, the other without).  A jewelry box that is decoupage with Jewish/meaningful pieces?  I bought one from my synagogue gift shop a few years ago and it was beautiful.

Both my daughters got several necklaces from Tiffany.  They sit in my jewelry box.

i really like to give menorahs --kids love Hanukkah and it's Judaica they can use (no offense to yads  Wink
i great site is Israeli products --they importa all made in Israel and have a warehouse in Baltimore --so you can get customer service/it doesn't take forever. I have ordered many times from them and they are great. check out the site. I also bought (in my syn gift shop) a menorah for a bat  who plays the cello-- that had musical instruments all over it. If the menorah is not enough $$ I give a check with it --but it's nice to have the object

I was going to recommend the klaidoscopes as well.  They are awesome and the owner is terrific.  She will not make two for the same child, so she will tell you if someone else has already done it for that child.

DS received a Gary Rosenthal Tzedaka box that is a work of art! He keeps it on his shelf in his bedroom and loves it. They are so unique. I think an arty piece of Judaica is a beautiful gift. A menorah would be wonderful as well.

It all depends on the kid. Our older son got lots of nice gifts and generous checks. His favorites? The hat someone brought back from MIT and a subcription to Scientific American.

He wore that hat for years and still keeps up the subscription

i was going to suggest you pm red gems--i bet she has lots of other things besides jewelry if the kiddo in question is not a jewelry person.

personally, i think something israeli is a great way to go for a mitzvah gift.

good luck.

Mitz - Since you are in Bergen County, you should check out the store in Fair Lawn - Priceless Possessions - which is the guy who was in Rudy's on Route 17 until they closed for tax evasion issues - (Rudy's not PP).

They discount Rosenthal Judaica, can special order many things, and has a decent collection of lots of items.

My disclaimer - I am in no way affiliated other than being a happy customer.

At our judaica shop we sell a lucite stand with a small torah inside...which the rabbi will put to the bm child's portion.  They run about 50.00.  you can google lucite torah stand.  They make a really nice and special gift.
