Maria asked:

Occasion: husbands 40th
I'd like to surprise my husband for his 40th - he loves big band, sinatra, cigars, golf, etc. although that doesn't necessarily fit in with the guests' likes - they'll be a mix - any ideas for a theme that will be fun for everyone? we definitely want dancing. Thanks for your help. Your site is a GREAT idea.

The Party Girl's advice is:

My suggestion to you is to incorporate all of his interests into one invitation. Why not do a caricature (check it out on our site www.party411.com/caricature.html or hire someone locally)? Use it for the invitations, centerpiece bases, sign-in board and more. The drawing can be of him with a cigar, driving his car (we'll make it a convertible so he's easy to see), listening to a Sinatra CD (the album cover can be obvious), and his golf clubs can be in the back seat. I would then incorporate his interests into a roast/toast type thing to make it fun. You may want to get 75 pictures together for a memory video (approximately $300) complete with music or let people bring memorabilia and make a scrapbook page while they are there for him to take home. Does this help?

Linda asked:

Occasion: sweet sixteen
What's this tradition of lighting 16 candles and calling certain friends/relatives up to the front to do it with you --and having a cute poem to go with it----isn't this for a bat mitzvah? my daughter tells me that it's done for a sweet sixteen as well--true??

The Party Girl's advice is:

Interesting...you and I both thought it was done just at a bat/bar mitzvah. But in the recent past, I have gotten tons of e-mail requests from kids who are doing it for their birthday parties. For a 16th birthday, you would do 17 candles, one for the birthday girl. She can write a poem or just express herself in a few sentences. Warn her to keep it brief, or people will start to fall asleep!

Linda asked:

Occasion: boy's 16th birthday
In need of ideas outside of a dance party. Checked into dance party and it would cost up to $800. I thought maybe a scavenger hunt/limo ride, dinner I would appreciate any input you can give.

The Party Girl's advice is:

Using a limo for a scavenger is always great fun. Add video cameras and some adults to take the video, and you have entertainment at dinner after the "hunt." Another idea would be a sporting event. How about taking all of them to a basketball game (maybe you can get a loge or there may be a party room. What do you think?

Rachael asked:

Occasion: 16th birthday
i am going to have a party with about 15-20 people for my sweet 16. boys and girls. my house is kind of small, and my family is usually there. my mom wants me to have a party at a bowling alley but my friends won't come cuz that's gay. there are not like any hotels around, and if i had it at my house, what would we do, and where could i have it. the biggest room is where my kitchen and living room connect but its not a party type place. my basement is dusty and would take for ever to clean. what should i do?

The Party Girl's advice is:

Are there any entertainment complexes around there that might have a party room? Check it out. Some of the local Pizza Hut restaurants have party rooms (as does McDonalds). Then you have a fun room to work with. From there, talk to your mom about playing some music and maybe getting someone to come to teach line dancing and stuff. What do you think?

Henderson asked:

Occasion: 30th birthday
I am working on planning a 30th bash for a female executive. To take place in March/April. The New York, New York theme sounds good but I would like some other ideas to present to my client. Can you help?

The Party Girl's advice is:

If you can find out her interests, you can base your theme around that. How many people will be attending? What do you think the budget might be? You may want to do a caricature of her for the invitation--take a look at them on our site (always gets raves) and make the theme...just that...her! www.party411.com/caricature.html

Laura asked:

Occasion: 4 year old birthday
Hi I am particularly looking for a theme for a 4th birthday for a little girl. Something fun for the kids to enjoy. The party will take place in a home so I am not sure the scavenger hunt would work although it was interesting. Any ideas?

The Party Girl's advice is:

The new M&M stuff out there is great fun. They have M&M mylar balloons in red, blue, green and yellow--the kids love them. They also have stuffed animals, little magnets, candy holders and much much more. That might work. It's hard to hold the interest of 4 year olds...so sometimes games don't work well. On the other hand you may want to consider hiring a balloon person who comes and makes animals, etc. Or a clown who face paints.

Tiffany asked:

Occasion: surprise 30th birthday for husband
Hi! First let me thank you for such a great website!! I now have a new idol! I love this stuff and am looking forward to reading your books!! I would like to know if you have any ideas for party favors for a 30th b-day. There will be about 30-50 people. The party will be held at my parent's bed and breakfast and banquet facility in the woods of Michigan. It will take most guests about an hour to get there. I would also like to know of any creative cake ideas, centerpieces (besides balloons), ways to roast the honoree, special "over the hill" food items or recipes, or theme ideas. Some of the interests of my husband include traveling (for work), old sports cars, golf, and singing( although he won't admit it.). Do you know of any places in the Grand Rapids, Michigan area that rents old sports cars for the day? I also like your idea of a fortune teller. Any ideas how much that costs? Perhaps a theme of "As Time Goes By" might work with pictures of him throughout his life, clocks, the song, and movie? Too much? Let me know what you think. Thanks so much!! Happy Planning.

The Party Girl's advice is:

Your welcome! Thanks for stopping by. So let's see. Depending on what your husband does for a living or his special interests, we have a company that does outstanding cakes in the shape of anything and everything--and they ship anywhere...Amazing Inc. E-mail at weamaze@aol.com. Their stuff is amazing. For roasting, check out these two people (they have great ideas): Ronnie the Writer at Gilbert Laskyand/or Hal at HGbard@aol.com. They can help you with that piece. Centerpieces?! Well, why not a caricature of your husband as the base. In the caricature, we can incorporate him singing, while he's driving an old sports car, with his golf clubs in the back seat. Once the caricature is done, you can use it as the invite, the centerpieces, the sign-in board, etc. The "As Time Goes By" theme can be pulled through with this fairly easily. On the invitation...the title could say..."As time goes by...with Tiffany's husband [whatever his name is]-- join us as we surprise him on his 30th!" We could then make the clock on the dashboard large, and have it hitting "30" instead of, let's say, 6 p.m. It all could be great fun. Let me know what you think!

Susan asked:

Occasion: husband turns 30
My husband is turning 40 on 1/23. I'm planning a party at a Mexican rest., w/mariachi's, obviously Mexican food....about 30 people, and it's a surprise. i wanted to do something different.....like a roast (humor) or gift thing......any ideas would be appreciated, but since time is of the essence----------ASAP! invites are going out late as it is - today! THANK YOU!

The Party Girl's advice is:

Que pasa, Susan? A roast would be great fun. If you need input on this, I have two sources for you...e-mail to glasky@home.com or HGbard@aol.com; both of these people write roasts and toasts and give ideas. You may also want to get a recording of Margaritaville and have table by table get up and sing along (people love to do this). Let them use their maracas and get crazy. Set up a place to take pictures and have Mexican hats, ponchos, etc. available for posing. Single-use cameras are available with a fiesta design. We have them if you can't find them elsewhere! Have fun.

Wanita asked:

Occasion: daughter 16th birthday party
Please help. I want this party to be fun for the kids, not boring. Need ideas for theme. Will be held in my home. Also, her birthday is really on 12-21, but too much activity for holidays to hold successful party. This must be a special party.

The Party Girl's advice is:

Why not hire a "dancer" from a local DJ (not expensive as long as you don't hire the DJ too)... to teach the kids line dancing and stuff? They usually bring their own CD's and a boom box. It's fun for all. These are teenagers, and they like to be cool--so you can't do anything too off. That's what makes it hard. Coming up with an activity might be fun--like dividing them up each to do a 100 piece puzzle: the winning team gets glow jewelry and stuff. We just did a party for a young girl where they did a scavenger hunt in the neighborhood but it was for food that was later donated to a homeless shelter. That's fun, and also gives them the feeling of good will. Any of this help? If not, let me know your daughter's interests, how many kids will be there and if it's girls or boys and girls!

Laurie asked:

Occasion: boyfriend's 30th/Sinatra/Rat Pack
Party Girl...I want to have a Rat Pack themed party for my Sinatra digging boyfriend. I've already started collecting cocktail glasses from thrift shops...and I thought of renting slot machines. Any ideas on what I can do to pull the overall theme together? Thanks for you help!!

The Party Girl's advice is:

A casino party is a great great idea. Good ol' Frankie would be proud of you. It might be a little difficult to do in your home unless it's on the large size, on the other hand--if you stick to slots and not blackjack, you should be okay. And people love to gamble. In this day and age it's easy to create anything. I would get a picture of Sinatra...standing with another man from maybe an album cover and using your computer (or have someone do it at a local print shop) drop in your boyfriend's face over the face of the person Sinatra is standing with. Or better yet, get a snapshot of the Rat Pack and add your boyfriend to it using a scanner. Any graphics person can do it for you. There's your invitation. The Rat Pack invites you to celebrate...so and so's 30th! Rent some film clips of them (maybe the movie Oceans 11) to be playing in the background. Play Sinatra music of course and maybe let people get up and perform some Sinatra songs... always fun (people love to make fools of themselves especially after a few--ask Frank, he'll tell you). Does this give you a head start?

Jessica asked:

Occasion: 16th Birthday/luau
For my 16th birthday I'm having a Hawaiian luau theme...I thought this would be a good idea since some of my friends and I recently returned from Hawaii. I've pretty much got the decorations, but any suggestions are fine. my real problem is Hawaiian games. I'll probably do some classic games too, but I'd like a few games that were kind of Hawaiian to go with the theme.

The Party Girl's advice is:

For decorations, by the way, try Oriental Trading Co. (www.orient.com). For games, try some of the Club Med stuff...like buy some coconuts and have people put them under their chin and pass them off to the next person (it's a blast, and many fall to the floor). A grass skirt contest would be fun... buy some inexpensive grass skirts (they are $4 or so), some Hawaiian music and have your guests get up and dance the hula. That should be good for a laugh or two. In fact, you may be able to find someone who teaches hula-- what a great entertainment thing to do--different, too. Does this help?

Tykeria asked:

Occasion: Sweet 16
What kind of activities should be done at a informal sweet 16? How can a Mickey Mouse theme be used at a sweet 16? Possible color themes?

The Party Girl's advice is:

Of course you can use Mickey and Minnie Mouse (don't forget Minnie) at a Sweet 16. Mickey Mouse is a staple in our lives no matter what the age of the celebrant! If you are going to use them, you probably want to use red and black (and maybe polka dots) as your color, since most of the stuffed Mickey's are dressed in those colors. All sorts of things are available as favors--from key chains to mugs to this, that and the other thing. Tie into your sweet 16 theme with a saying at the entrance like... Minnie and Mickey wish "whoever" Happy Sweet 16! Use Mickey and Minnie plush (stuffed animals) as the centerpieces...and tie balloons off one of their hands. Then, give them to an orphanage or hospital for the kids. It's a nice thing to do... and the centerpieces aren't wasted. On each table put a tent saying that after the party the "celebrant" will be donating them and list the name of the hospital or other recipient. You should be able to do this for between $200 and $300. Plush Mickey/Minnie dolls are about $8 each on the small size. Need further help? Let me know. We can get you any Mickey/Minnie stuff you might need!

Pamela asked:

Occasion: Mother's 80th
I live 3 hours away from my mom. She is helping me plan her dinner party with names, addresses, etc., to be held either at a restaurant/banquet room. What kind of decorating can I do that won't take up much time? What type of theme do you suggest? Any party favors? What about a poster board filled with pictures from birth to now? Anything else you can suggest will be GREATLY appreciated. I want to make this a SPECIAL DAY for her. Of course, she will have a corsage. Since we will be paying for the dinner, how do I indicate that on the invitation? Thanks!!

The Party Girl's advice is:

First of all, most people will assume that you are paying when they get the invitation. So no need to even discuss that. A "memory" board with pictures is a great idea; take the pictures to a local Kinko's to make copies so you don't ruin the originals and you'll be much better off. Make sure the restaurant or party room has an easel. As far as easy centerpieces go...you may just want to hire a balloon company. It fills the room, is very festive and is very inexpensive. Plus they have great balloons with "happy birthday" and "80" on them. Match your balloon colors to your cloths and napkins. You may also want to have a sign-in board for everyone to leave good wishes; if not a board, you may want to leave a journal out for everyone to sign and for your mom to enjoy later. As far as a theme, you can use her birthday (80); you can use something that everyone knows about her (like her favorite color, favorite sport) or you can pick something out of the air that's fun like magic (the "magic of turning 80!"). Anything works. And magic is great fun. You may then want to hire a magician for the cocktail hour. What do you think?

Laurieann asked:

Occasion: sock hop children's party
Do you have a catalog to assist me in planning a sock hop birthday party for my 8 yr old? The party will be in my house. There will be about 15 girls.

The Party Girl's advice is:

We don't have a catalogue, but I suggest you get the Oriental Trading Co. catalogue that has great favors and stuff that 8 year olds would love. In the meantime, you should pass out socks as soon as the kids arrive, like different colors for different feet (they'll love that). At most party stores, there are decorations for rock and roll parties and, of course, that fits with a sock hop. You may also want to pass out some glow jewelry (girls love this)...

Crazy asked:

Occasion: 18th birthday/daughter
Hi, I just found your web site and it looks like it has a lot of great information. My daughter is turning 18 next month and would like to throw her a surprise party. Any ideas/ themes you could supply would be appreciated. I have a small house so I don't have a lot of room but I would like to invite all her friends (up to 30 guys and girls). Thanks in advance for any advice you can give me.

The Party Girl's advice is:

Kids turning 18 don't need a lot to do. They want do eat, schmooze and act kool. If you could give me some of your daughter's interests, I certainly could come up with a fun theme. It could be based on a TV show, her favorite color or her favorite sport. There's so much stuff out there. On the other hand, February is Mardi Gras month in Louisiana. How about that as a theme? Pass out masks, glow jewelry and more and the kids will have a blast. What do you think?

Crazy asked:

Occasion: friends daughter's 12 birthday
what kind of party games and other party stuff should 12 year old girls play other than twister (this party is only at home) and what kind of theme

The Party Girl's advice is:

For party game ideas, there's a great book available at the library or at any local party store that's filled with pages and pages of ideas. It's by Penny Warner (she has several on the subject), and you should get yourself a copy. Truth or Dare, Trivia (about the birthday girl), and others work no matter what size the group. On the other hand, you may want to come up with an activity like baking cookies and decorating them for the homeless shelters--that is not only fun but also teaches the girls a great lesson in good will. Keeps 'em busy, too.

Bea asked:

Occasion: 40th Birthday
What a great business idea you have. I hope it works well for you. I have a need for a more risqué 40th theme for a wild bunch of friends. We're getting a limo as a surprise for my girlfriends 40th ( hubbys too) & we're taking her to a female strip tease joint that's she's said she wants to go to! I can't believe we're actually doing it. What I need help with is the fill-in time. Ideas for decor in the limo or party favors. (I'm thinking about those naughty fortunes). We're going to have snacks in the limo & stop at a dance club & have dessert at a favorite spot. Any ideas? She has a great sense of humor. Thanks ! Bea

The Party Girl's advice is:

The Naughty but Nice Fortune Cookies are great fun and would work fabulously for what you're doing. However, I would buy into the "strip tease" thing a little more and make it even more fun. First of all, as soon as you get in the limo, make your girlfriend wear a special t-shirt that night (with a really big 40 on it!). Buy whistles for all the girls to blow when the guys come out and start stripping. That should get their attention. And maybe get t-shirts for all the girls that say, "she's 40!" Then go to a local store that has gag gifts (like Spencer's) and buy gag gifts for down time. There's some great stuff out there. Another suggestion, after the "strip joint" and before the dance club, pass out glow jewelry for everyone to wear at the dance club. There are bracelets, necklaces and glasses (they glow for six hours). After dancing and on your way to dessert, you may want to pass out the gag gifts. Does this help?

Anita asked:

Occasion: 17th birthday
I want to throw a party for my 17th birthday in February and I don't know what to do for activities and entertainment. I'm planning on inviting about 10-15 of my closest friends and I'm thinking of including dinner and maybe a sleepover. Most likely, I'm going to have to cover some of the cost so I'm hoping you could give me some inexpensive ideas as to what to do. I guess I'm kinda hoping to throw a simple but creative (and fun) party that everyone, including myself, will enjoy. Thanks!

The Party Girl's advice is:

Well, why not have a fortune teller come--that's not expensive (and maybe some of your friends can help out?). That's always great fun and it gives you something to talk about all evening. Another fun thing to do is to have someone come to do everyone's make-up, but I don't know your friends and whether they would be into that or not. Games are kind of hard when you have 15 people, unless you break up into groups or teams. There's a great book by Penny Warner available at your local party store that gives tons of game ideas...maybe you can get it at the library. What date is your birthday? Is it around Valentine's Day or President's Day... because a theme might work and once that is decided there's more you can do. Let me know.

Ana asked:

Occasion: Boyfriend's 30th - Surprise
I need help planning my boyfriend's surprise party. He will be turning 30. I would like a theme, but I can't think of one. What do you suggest? Of the top of my head, I thought of dinner w/a small group of friends, followed by the surprise group somewhere, like D&B. Please help!

The Party Girl's advice is:

Ana, Need some more information...like what are his interests? How about a progressive evening...picking up friends as you go? Start with drinks at a local establishment and have 4 people waiting. Move on for appetizers someplace else, and another four people are there. Finally, to the dinner and celebration...where another so many people await? He'll be blown away by the time you're done!

Susan asked:

Occasion: sweet 16
What special things should I include in this surprise 16th party. I will have 85 for dinner, a black and white theme, with several family, and her friends giving memories of her life to date. I want to do something very special at the beginning or end of party. Please help

The Party Girl's advice is:

It seems to me that you could make photo blocks of her first 16 years as centerpieces. Easy to do. And for a special touch, add elegant black and white balloons (with streaks of silver throughout) attached to each. Fills the room nicely and is very festive. Balloons used to be considered tacky; not anymore. We use them to decorate for black tie benefits and corporate events. You should also include a sign in board for everyone to sign as they walk in. If not that, a journal where everyone can leave "wishes for the future" for your daughter. At the beginning of the party, you should have your daughter introduced. Let everyone stand and honor her. Near the end, make a presentation of the cake. This is always fun, and everyone can sing along. Let me know if you need further assistance. And have fun.

Tricia asked:

Occasion: Mom's 60th birthday/Caribbean and Latin
I'm looking to buy a piñata that has a Caribbean theme to it. Any ideas where I could find one?

The Party Girl's advice is:

There is a company that has zillions of piñatas...it is Unique Industries. They have parrots and other fun stuff that you could use. Call them to find out where to buy near you--800-888-0559.

The Party Girl's advice is:

Twweetti...there's a great book by Penny Warner that has lots of games in it. You can find it at the library or buy it at any local party store. Let me know if there's a problem, and I'll tell you where you can get it.

angie asked:

Occasion: 21st birthday
I really hope you can help me. It is my 21st Birthday coming up and i would like to have a theme party (it's a lot more fun) The theme - i have no idea. I want something fun and memorable. (Although not to expensive)Eg: My 18th Birthday we had a turn-around party - all the girls dressed up as guys and the guys dressed up as girls we had an absolute blast and all to this day still remember. My interests are partying, movies, dancing etc My budget is no more than R2000-00 People - about 20 Favorite TV show is V.I.P and Friends Favorite group is U2 PLEASE HELP ME WITH A FUN & MEMORABLE 21ST THEME PARTY ! Thanks ANGIE

The Party Girl's advice is:

Well, you've given me an idea...why not a U2 party. But use the "U2" as the theme in many ways. Like...on the invitation... U2 are invited to celebrate with Angie!" U2 should be at this location at this time, etc. Create a trivia game about U2 and you, too and leave clues around the room about the group and about you. Divide the group into teams and come up with some funky prize for the team that gets the most answers correct. Does something like that work? Where are you from?

Kristina asked:

Occasion: Sweet sixteen party (dance)
Hi my name is Kristina i'm 15 going on 16 for my sweet sixteen b-day I'm wanting to throw a party hopeful a lot of my high school friends come. I have a DJ. But one thing I lack is stuff to do like should I have games I was planning to play spin the bottle. Also heard something about a candle lighting ceremony. If you could help me I would be grateful

The Party Girl's advice is:

Candle lighting ceremonies aren't really a game or activity. It's where you call up each of your most important friends to light a candles (usually you do one for each year of your life and light the 17th one yourself; that's the one for good luck). When you call each of them up, you say something sweet or read a poem about them. That's up to you. Spin the bottle? Mom and Dad may not be too happy about that. There are a lot of other fun games you can play, especially with music. The other thing you can do--is hire a dance instructor to come and teach everyone the electric slide and other line dances. For games, go to your local party store and get Penny Warner's Party Game Book. There are tons of suggestions. And Happy Birthday.

diedra asked:

Occasion: 30th birthday, surprise
i am throwing a surprise birthday party for my sister in law, she thinks we are doing a birthday party for my son, which would be done in the race car theme, black and white, so the decorations will easily fool her. Anyway, we are planning on having hamburgers, beans, potato salad, etc. do you have any other ideas for food, that is easy to do. thank you

The Party Girl's advice is:

Fun food seems to go with this theme, and I think you are on the right track with burgers and such. If this is a "standing around" type party, then you should serve finger foods and nothing too messy or too hard to hold onto with drink in hand. For the cake, you should make two cakes and frost one with white frosting and one with dark chocolate; then cut them and place them on a platter to form a racing flag! By the way, there are great race cars that are holders for burgers, hotdogs and fries. If you are interested, we can forward you the information on those. By the way, don't forget a sign in board. Maybe a caricature of your sister-in-law waving a racing flag saying..."it's a race to the finish, and I'm far from that..." or something referring to age! Did I help?

Kristina asked:

Occasion: sweet sixteen surprise party
Ok, me and my friend are giving our best friend a sweet sixteen surprise slumber party. She has never had a party before so we want to make it special. Do you have any ideas about what we could do to entertain at a big slumber party? Also do u have any general advice on surprise parties? Thanks~Kristina

The Party Girl's advice is:

Is your friend into music? Why not hire a dancer from a local DJ to teach all of you different dance steps (like line dances, the Electric Slide, etc.)...that would be great fun. Surprise parties work really well; however, you have to make sure she doesn't find out. Why not start someplace totally different...for instance, at a restaurant or film. Make plans with her to go, like just the two of you, and when you get there, everyone will be waiting. Does that work?

Helen asked:

Occasion: 50th birthday/mom
Hi! I'm throwing a 50th birthday party for my mom next year. We were thinking of having a "Purple Passion" party since that is her favorite color. Can you think of a way to combine turning 50 and the color purple? The party is for about 30-40 people and will probably be held in November. Thanks in advance for any ideas! --Helen

The Party Girl's advice is:

Wow, a purple passion party. Sounds great. You can do something on the invitation about her that she's so passionate about turning 50, she's turning purple! A caricature would be fun. Decorating in all purple would be a riot. First of all, there are fabulous plates, cups, napkins, etc., available with purple florals, solids and more. Tablecloths could be solid purple. Napkins could be lavender (another form of purple). Centerpieces can be florals (if they are affordable) using only purple and lavender flowers (easily done). Have everyone wear purple as well...make sure to include purple in your menu! Grape Popsicles come to mind, but I'm sure there are more items than that (beets??). Make a "purple passion" drink of some sort. So on and so forth. Does that help?

bobby asked:

Occasion: 16th birthday/son
My son's 16th birthday--there will be 100 high school kids. my son loves bmw cars and baseball...he is also a movie and Hollywood buff. we have a budget but we'd like to see what our money will get...a theme would be nice... i would say the budget is less than $4,000....

The Party Girl's advice is:

Sorry, I'm late getting back to you. With $4,000 I would do this... I would have a caricature made of him. That way you can encompass both loves... He could be sitting behind the wheel of a BMW, waving with one hand; in the back seat is baseball gear...and, as well, leaning up on the seat could be a movie poster from "Field of Dreams!" That gets all three things in. This caricature (or forms of it) is then used for: entry/welcome piece band piece sign-in board centerpieces (made back to back on foam core with balloons coming out) Your theme could center around baseball...and the title could be "Play ball with ..." You can rent a fast-pitch or radar pitch machine--the kids love these. You can put chocolate baseballs on all the tables. The balloons can be baseball mylars. You can put up movie posters of all old baseball films: The Natural, Field of Dreams, and others You can give out softee balls with the logo of his favorite team You can give out inflatable bats (unfortunately, they soon become weapons) And things like that... Do you follow? great balloon pacifiers, etc. With a little more information, I could assist you better. Number of people, budget, something about the mom-to-be, etc.

My friend is having a "Fireman" theme birthday party for her 5-year old son on January 9th. I need a few more quick ideas for her. She is having a fire truck at the house and fireman hats are the "happy." Anything else quick and cute?

The Party Girl's advice is:

Wow...this is hard. How about a pint-size "yellow" firefighter coat (or whatever they're called) with a fire hat for quick Polaroid shots? Always fun and memorable, too. And if you want a prop or two, have a garden hose available for them to hold like they are putting out a fire. Let's see. Why not give out "red hots" since they are hot like fire? And "fireballs" would work too. Fill a goody bag. And give that out when they leave. Does this help?

Occasion: 10th birthday
My daughter's 10th birthday is coming up and we were planning on a dress up party. My daughter had attended a party last month and there was hired help that dressed up the girls in different costumes, put make up on them and took an instant picture. The girls all loved this. I was planning on doing the same thing; however, I called the dress up people and the cost was outrageous. I was hoping to do something on the same order myself but need some suggestions as to what to dress them up in. I can purchase a feather boa wrap for under $10.00 but I can't think of anything else. At the party my daughter attended each girl's picture was taken individually in a costume and then the birthday girl got a group photo but having only 1 boa won't take care of the group picture. Do you have any suggestions? Thanks.

The Party Girl's advice is:

I think I can help. If you order an Oriental Trading Co. catalogue (www.oriental.com), you will find all sorts of inexpensive things they can use for dress up...safari hats for less than $1, binoculars, boas, beach hats and more! Plenty, plenty. and you'll stay well within your budget. As well, you may want to have someone come and do makeup (or put some out --the inexpensive kind-- and let them make up each other...they'll love that!). Does this help??

Occasion: 50th birthday/surprise
Please help me with some ideas on surprising my mom for a 50th birthday party. I have no theme or any ideas. Her birthday is Feb. 9, 1999. Thank You.

The Party Girl's advice is:

Tell me this...what are your mother's hobbies? Does she collect anything? How many people do you want to attend? Where do you plan to have it? What is your budget? And I'll be happy to get right back to you!

Occasion: 40th birthday
I was wondering if you had any good ideas for a "Forties" Theme party. A good friend of mine is turning 40 and although we have the theme picked out I was wondering if there were some good ideas out there. I would appreciate the help. Celia

The Party Girl's advice is:

Best thing to do is to let me know what theme you have picked out...and let me take a whirl with it. I'll give you ways to pull it through. Also, need your budget, number of people, where you are having the event, etc.

Occasion: birthday
I am planning my daughters 15th birthday party. I want a co ed party where the girls stay the night and i want to invite about 25 people. it will be at my home and i need help on what games to play, what food to serve, decorations, etc. i want the party to go from about 6:30 to midnight please help and if you could include any book references that could help me i would love you for it. thanks i hope to hear from you soon

The Party Girl's advice is:

Happy to help. There is a book about games by Penny Warner you should be able to buy at any party store. This outlines a huge list of different activities games for both teens and adults. As far as decorations go, the best thing to do, the easiest thing to do and the most affordable is to use balloons. Call a local balloon store (if you can't find one, let me know). A few balloons go a very long way. And they can mix Happy Birthday mylars in with it. Of course, you should have entertainment. If you can't afford or don't want to spend money on an inexpensive DJ (believe me, I understand), you may be able to get a dancer who will teach line dancing and other dances in right in your very own living room. He would use your music and sound system (any boom box works), and he/she would get everyone to participate. Make the food easy...pizza is probably best. And don't forget a birthday cake.

Bruce asked:

Occasion: My Sister's 37th Birthday
My sister's birthday is on December 25th? Where can we find a restaurant or party center that is open on that day?

The Party Girl's advice is:

Try a Chinese restaurant. That's about the only type of restaurant that will be open!
